Wagner Moura – Preserving Historical Memory in “The Secret Agent” | The Daily Show

The Daily Show | March 5, 2026

Actor Wagner Moura joins Jordan Klepper, fresh off of his Golden Globe win for his performance in “The Secret Agent.” Moura, a Brazilian native, describes how the film, which takes place in 1977 Brazil during a heavy dictatorship, was a way for him and director Kleber Mendonça Filho to process their perplexity after their country’s return to dictatorship values with the election of far-right president Jair Bolsonaro in 2018. They also discuss how this period piece resonates with Brazilians today, as well as audiences all over the world who are likewise facing authoritarian threats, the importance of retaining historical memory in order to avoid repeating past mistakes, and why he gravitates towards projects that merge art with politics. #DailyShow #WagnerMoura #TheSecretAgent #Brazil

I'm Brazilian and it's sad that I have a friend, also a Brazilian, who is a deep Bolsonaro and DJT fan and she truly believes that the all these stories about the dictatorship are fake. She is also a kind devoted Catholic. But I think she is mistaken, she is not as kind as she thinks…

It's quite obvious that the host hasn't seen the movie and hasn't done any research on the historical background; they have absolutely nothing of substance to say

I am Brazilian, and I can say this clearly: Brazil has never experienced a real dictatorship in the way it is being portrayed.
Many artists, including Wagner Moura, openly support a left-wing political system that has dominated Brazil for over 20 years. This system has had strong influence over education, social policies, and public institutions.
While social programs are important, the model adopted has created long-term dependency and placed a heavy tax burden on working citizens, while economic development remains limited.
Corruption scandals have been widely documented, and accountability has been weak.
The minimum wage is not enough to cover basic living costs such as rent, food, and transportation, which creates serious financial pressure for working families.
During Jair Bolsonaro’s presidency, Brazil experienced stronger economic performance in several areas, even during the pandemic.
Therefore, it is reasonable to question whether Wagner Moura’s political statements truly reflect the reality faced by the Brazilian working class.
Many universities and major media outlets promote progressive political narratives, often supported by government funding, which limits ideological diversity.
From the perspective of many Brazilian workers, this discourse feels disconnected from everyday struggles and economic reality.

Dont trust his words about Bolsonaro when he says Bolsonaro brought back values of the dictatorship…Just check out how economy here grows when he was president and compare with our lovely Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva…Nice actor one of the bests, but love to lie about Bolsonaro

The lesson here is: when a regime/dictatorship is being installed soon you'll have to be like a "secret agent" just because you'd like to express your impressions and thoughts to others.

    …………
    TRANSLATER

Given the millions of dollars Wagner Moura received from the Federal Government, he did no more than his OBLIGATION in seeking some kind of reward. This same government, by the way, will hand over the next term with the biggest historical deficit in public coffers.

⚠️Be careful with the actor's statements; he has always been from the party that supports the current left-wing president, with ministers who are part of the scheme that is sinking Brazil. Food prices have doubled in supermarkets, taxes have increased absurdly, not to mention that Brazil has trillions in debt. This current government has started arresting people simply because they don't agree with the path of corruption that is happening in the country, and causing people to lose purchasing power; salaries aren't enough to survive.
And remembering the current president of Brazil, he has always been a friend of the dictator called Maduro, the president of Venezuela currently imprisoned by the American police themselves, for trafficking, for lying, for rigging elections, he would lose and simply say that he won, just so he wouldn't leave power. This has already been proven. In other words, the one who has ties to dictatorship is not Bolsonaro, but the current president. Involved in several scandals and convicted for participating in corruption. But strangely, he didn't go to jail, he got out of prison and even won elections, with the majority voting for Bolsonaro, similar to what happens in Venezuela. That's why you shouldn't listen to artists and actors who are funded by this current government simply for hidden interests. Go to Brazil and talk to the people in the streets, and you will know the truth.
