I used to work IT in a government position.
I would frequently have to go to the desks of government workers in order to fix problems with their computer.
Those desks would, about 70% of the time, have at least one religious thing on them. (I live in the bible belt.) Some desks were COVERED in religious things. (Always/only Christianity.)
In a conversation at the workplace once, I mentioned being atheist as it came up and was relevant in the conversation.
I was immediately told not to say that too loudly as someone might overhear and report it to higher-ups and get me fired.
Atheism was not allowed in this government position. The message was immediate and not unclear.
