TRAINWRECKORDS: Lou Reed and Metallica’s “Lulu”

Todd in the Shadows | June 4, 2026

Lou Reed loved to annoy critics, and Metallica has been making their fans angry for decades, but somehow they made an album so bad that they made the world angry.

It really does show just how even if you're both super into it, some collabs just don't work. The silver lining to the latter end of Lou Reed's musical career is his appearance on Plastic Beach the year before because Some Kind of Nature feels like both collaborators understood what they were doing and one of the coolest songs I've ever heard and it was my first Lou Reed experience as a teenager.
Also what's with Lars Ulrich? Does he just always sound like, snippy and mildly offended to be talking at any given time?

Just so you know, I've requested you be added to the "Users who use the R-Word" blocklist on Bluesky, and also tagged your sponsor in. I tried being polite, you blocked me. Being an edgy American is not an excuse, it's a disgusting slur that causes real pain to millions of people, myself included, and if you reinforce its use publicly I'm going to try to destroy your career. If you won't take an ethical stance, maybe I can persuade you of the commercial merits of not being a despicable hack edgelord. Do the decent thing and reupload this without the slur and I'll retract, otherwise, gfy

I always saw Lulu as an album whose reputation preceded it; that we know it as a bad album to such a degree that nobody has actually listened to it.

After this video I'm starting to think that this included Lou Reed and Metallica.

I can say I appreciate Metallica branching out and trying different stuff. I think if they did this again AFTER this album, they could have done something cool together.

1:33 While some people have cited it as 'avant Garde' and 'ahead of it's time'. 'Metal Machine Music' really seems to be a big 'troll' given Reed said 'anyone who gets to the end is dumber than me'. Apparently the Breen in Star Trek's voice is based on the album!
8:10 Metalic have said there big Dolly Parton fans which makes me wish they had done an album together!
