This Is Why The Bee Gees Rock.

Justin Hawkins Rides Again | April 5, 2026

I am a huge Bee Gees fan. I wanted to finally do a video about them and I chose this song, “You Win Again”. I’m not sure why, I just love it. Allow me to walk you through it and let me know what you think at the end.

my dad's all time favorite band. Justin, I always thought You looked like my favorite bee gee, Robin, when you were younger rocking the long hair. my parents took me to a bee gees concert when I was a kid and it was awesome. Would love to hear you sing their song called Holiday. oh Justin , I just remembered robin gibb did this fucking amazing solo album in the 80s. check out the song Boys Fall in Love

I love how each line seems to finish on a high so it makes for an optimistic song. I could analyse the genius of Gibb Brothers songs all day, they’re second only to Lennon & McCartney as British songwriters. The pure genius is the brothers songwriting stand out, above the mid 80’s production and slightly problematic lyrics. The Gibbs song structures are a lesson to any songwriter.

I was raised on the bothers Gibb, and I thank you for drawing attention to something other than their disco years, which, unfortunately in my opinion, is the period most people associate them with. I actually shouted YES at the screen when you said you chose “You Win Again”. These guys were such extremely eminent songwriters from day one (I started a joke anyone?), and it’s a shame their legacy usually comes down to “That Saturday Night Fever band”. This song is one of the greatest pop songs ever written, I would argue though, respectfully, that the true hook in “You Win Again” is “so little til-ii-iime”. As for the “problematic” lyrics, they were always very metaphoric in their lyrics, weren’t they?

I have a slight problem with the Gm7. As you rightly say , the production is very of its time (and in my view a bit mushy!) But back to the point, to me, that chord sounds like a straight G minor- although an 'Unplugged' version might sound nice with the minor 7th. By the way, I've been singing I Believe in a Thing Called Love in bands for about 15 years, and got the verse melody incorrect until you mentioned folks getting it wrong (on that "talent" show) 😛

I love how you gradually see how problematic the lyrics were to our favorite songs. Far too often I am jamming out to a fave song and then the lyrics hit me and I am like, dammit!

Thanks! I always favored Robin, he sang my favorite Bees Gees song. I started a joke. Have you heard that one? Huh, I just noticed that your vibratto and Robin's vibratto are similar.

Please do more Bee Gees. My two faves: Fanny and Nights on Broadway. The last album had some great ones too. I’ve always been a Mo fan, so Man in the Middle tickled me. I miss the twins 🙁

Apologies to all, but…..i hate the BeeGees soooo much. I have been quoted as saying that if i won the lottery, i would spend all of it to acquire all of their music and the rights so that i could make sure that they were never played anywhere, ever, in the world again. Hyperbole? Yes🙂 but saying it makes me smile😂

I was just a little kid when the Bee Gees blew up the disco world. A lot of rockers HATED them but, even as a child, I recognized their skill at writing great songs as well as those MASTERFUL harmonies!!

But there was a gossip that robin gibb was trying to hire a hitman to kill his exwife who wanted half of his fortune. So “Ill be following you” sounds creepy to me

This song and the video to it, has always sort of signalled to me the end of an era in music. Everyone involved or featured in it seemed to be imbued with that sense of fun and non-ironic, uncynical appreciation for their just getting to partake in that moment, which was on its way out in the music industry. I don't know whether they knew of this being such a portentous moment – especially as they themselves went on to see something of a resurgence in their own careers – but it smacks of innocence, camaraderie and that late 80's optimism. And I LOVE the 80s vibe and production in this track…this is my other favourite song of theirs, next to 'New York Mining Disaster 1941'…and they hark from my neck of the woods on the Isle of Man, so you know I'm a verified expert…I'm gonna break down your defences one by one Justin. I mean it! x

My mum loved the Bee Gees, I missed seeing you while you were here in Australia as I got sick but hopefully you'll be back. I love your Phantom of the Paradise t shirt, poor old Winslow
