Thank you for this one. I am a forever Yardbirds fan. I bought "Over Under Sideways Down" in 1966. I still have that album, although the grooves are pretty worn out. Saw them live at the Starlight Ballroom at Mountain Park in Holyoke Ma. in 1968. They were incredibly exciting live. I think that show literally changed the direction of my life. Jimmy Page was over-the-top amazing. Do "Little Games" next. (please)

Great album! I love the Yardbirds! I do agree with the criticisms, but I still dig the everlovin' heck out ot it. Favorite Yardbirds song? Shapes of Things, Happenings Ten Years Time Ago, What Do You Want, Evil Hearted You, Heart Full of Soul.

The For Your Love B side, Got to Hurry, primarily because of how Fred Frith transformed it with extended measures, changed meters and adding bassoon to the arrangement for Bittern Storm Over Ulm on Henry Cow's Unrest album. The original is clearly a group jam, but credited to O. Rasputin (Gomelsky) because it was customary at the time for producers to take the publishing on the B side.

I love your work because you make me think. In this case back to the sixties when I bought all the Yardbirds albums but played them only rarely. Why so? I was never excited by their music. It never gave me joy or changed my mood in the way that other bands did. Maybe the guitars were innovative and technical but that of itself doesn’t reach the soul – not mine anyway. And it never led me, as a regular punter, anywhere new. So why did I keep buying the stuff? I think I thought I should like it, that it was my fault that I didn’t, that one day I’d see the light. I never did. Was it to my ears over produced, not ‘live’ enough, maybe even insincere?
    Musical taste is so mysterious.

One critical event that happened in May 1966, before this album was released, and a major indicator of Jeff's departure from the Yardbirds was his recording of Becks Bolero with Jimmy Page, Keith Moon, Nicky Hopkins, and John Paul Jones. Jeff wanted to get Steve Marriott on vocals but couldn't. Had Jeff succeeded in forming this group, it would not only have had huge repercussions for the Yardbirds, but perhaps Led Zeppelin, The Who, and rock as a whole, because Becks Bolero is years ahead of its time. An honest to god monster of a track.

A great album, no matter what version you have. I'm reminded of an interview with Jeff Beck about why he quit the band, where he said something like "We were in the states and I saw a blonde drive by in a convertible and I thought "There's something you'd never see back in England — I need to live here!"" 😄
But this video also made me think that The Yardbirds are a band that would benefit from a good box set that gathers everything together in one place. But I'm guessing the rights situation is still messy.

What is and isn't remembered has nothing to with artistic merit and everything to do with bags of cash or coke slipped long ago to some producer or program director.
