Remember When | March 6, 2026

#rememberwhen a quiet little prison movie with no superheroes, no love story, and no happy title somehow became one of the most beloved films of all time? The Shawshank Redemption gave us Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman, and a whole lot of quotes to live by—but the stories behind the scenes? Even better. From a nearly totally different cast (hint: Tom Cruise) to creepy filming locations, uncredited cameos, and a prop that smelled suspiciously like dessert, we’re counting down 15 weird facts even diehard fans probably missed.

Remember when you first saw Andy crawl through that sewer pipe to freedom? You could practically feel the rain, right? Man, this movie hits just as hard every time. Which Shawshank moment still gives you chills — Andy’s escape, the opera scene, or that beach reunion?

If you’re our kind of movie nerd, subscribe and share this one with a friend who’s watched Shawshank at least 20 times on TNT.

Nobody cares, but I reckon Gil Bellows would make a great lead in a biopic about Bruce Springsteen.
I wonder if he tried out for the role in Deliver Me from Nowhere (?). Maybe too old to represent Bruce in the "Nebraska" period.

@14:07 Ironically, in the black community during the time period of the movie, black people with mixed ancestry were sometimes given the nickname "Red", including, most famously, "Detroit Red", a/k/a Malcolm X.

I first saw this movie on one of the cable movie channels sometime in the early 2000s, and it became one of the few Stephen King adaptations that I actually like watching.

Love the video but a couple of knitpicks I apologize lol.

Andy didn't receive the Bible as a gift. The warden states as soon as Andy arrives in the prison that all the prisoners get a Bible.

Also, Andy didnt play the record from the warden's office. It was the front desk/reception area. I'd be pretty surprised if mail and packages were delivered to the warden's office haha.

I just watched this again yesterday and as always, noticed a new detail.
When Andy gets out of the hole after 2 months near the end of the film, he and Red are talking in the yard.
Andy is talking about living in Mexico and Red says “those are just shitty pipe dreams”. You are so right Red

I loved this movie long before I ever went to prison, but I must say it altered my perception of what prison is like. I sounded like a complete idiot giving the whole "ice pick to the brain causing the jaw to bite down hard" speech when the guy wasn't even holding an ice pick. I felt like a fool. 😔🙄😬

I’ve never watched Shawshank but I have read the short story. It’s incredible. Is Andy really innocent in the movie? Because it’s never made clear whether he’s guilty or innocent in story and I think it’s better that way.

ur voice is super annoying….how can ppl listen to you from start to finish,, at least put on some interviews, some outside voice maybe a 10 second speech from one of the actors,,, make a twist, a change… u cant go talk from start to finish? audience listen to same voice for 25mins? wake the f up, this isnt good.

Wrongfully imprisoned? Andy was guilty as sin. The guy always follows through during the movie. What makes the beginning any different?

Couple of things 1: Andy was guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, a man whose wife just dumped him has bullets you f the same caliber that killed her and her new man and no evidence of his own claim. Yea that’s going to convince a jury. But he didn’t kill his wife. 2: studio interference is one of those things where we here about it more when it fails, M night probably would have had some better movies he listened to some advice and when it works the director doesn’t usually want to admit they screwed up.

When andy busted the pipe, it should not have burst open and spewed up water like that. The thing was not under preasure which is the only way it would spew up the water like that. If it was under pressure he woudl not have head space to breath regardless of the methan.

I think the other reason the movie flopped in the box office (as it was the reason I didn't go) was that the runtime of movies in 90's was about 90 to 100 minutes. Shawshank ran 2 hours and 22 minutes. The 23 year old me did not want to spend almost 3 hours in a theater once you add previews and such. I still haven't see past 30 minutes of Oppenheimer.

Such a diamond in the rough. Given all the blockbusters that it was up against. I can watch Shawshank without a concern. If you ask me to watch any of the other movies, I will pass. Definitely a favorite of mine.
