mysticism is still very tightly entangled with philosophy. the current popular view of mysticism is that of the new age crystal gazer. but in truth those who are intertwined with different occult practices often find themselves deeply entrenched in philosophy. some of these are the direct result of certain established paths, such as Hermeticism or Sufism . while others are simply a consequence of having a person actively trying to make sense of the world around them beyond the limits of the strictly material.

Mysticism and theology are part of western philosophy and are not illogical. There is great western esoteric movement which is really mystical in itself and is part of western philosophy. Theology never ended being part of philosophy, anyone who argues otherwise doesn't understand ether. All philosophy can be illogical and logical. It's matter of wrong vs right. Illogical philosophy is just bad philosophy. We consider western philosophy to be distinctly logical not because it's some unique trait of it but because it's objectively the best.

You should work to disassociate belief in a creator with your personal subjective concept of a bearded man in the sky. It's very misrepresentative of other concepts of God that exist and keeps people who don't give it any thought in a shallow state of mind. The islamic concept of God has no form, to believe so is the worst sin possible for us.

We became a people of one dimension, it is truly frustrating to be living in a time like unironically. Even though I still beleive that philosophy is good until it comes into mystical writings, I find this video very interesting.

Stupid conclusion. Mysticism was a part of all theology-related philosophy, but philosophy itself arose from attempt to shake off theology. You rarely see any mysticism in greek naturalists like atomists. With the Renaissance, this trend also started. We can greatly appreciate theological philosophy for sure, but there is no reason to be inclusive to it. Function of any school of philosophy is the exclusion of other schools, so unless you yourself are a theologian, there is scarcely a motive for any greater appreciation.

I dislike this video's intro for the fact that it tries to divorce philosphers from Western Asia from Europe when in fact, they're intertwined. Stop trying to other or exoticise us.

I just finished my philosophy course Mysticism of the East and West, now I have a final due in 2 days. As an aspiring psychedelic therapist there's always such a huge misunderstanding of what Mysticism is and you did a great job on explaining the universal insights of ineffability and the union of opposites.

Really nice that you're taking a look at philosophers from outside the typical western cultural sphere. The history of philosophy is vast and multicultural, too often it is restricted to just the western tradition.

If mystics are fair game for you, I think it’d be cool to see something about Richard Alpert/Ram Dass, Neem Karoli Baba, or Ramana Maharshi
