The Most Mysterious Website – Mortis.com

Mortis.com is a strange website that existed in the late 1990’s to early 2010’s the website simply prompted users for a domain and password to enter the site, but no one could figure out what was actually hidden in the terabytes of data the website stored? So what could it be?

Why are people even trying to break into his website? These people on Reddit and 4chan need to get a life. It's his personal website, it does not concern them. It's that simple

I'm not entirely sure what I found since I'm an extremely amateur programmer, but I was taking a look at the source code on mortis.cc and found something about the site holding 666 bytes of data. My assumption is that the site isn't being used for anything and simply exists to throw people off, since there's nothing but a black screen on there. Again, I'm not sure how to read it, but if anyone knows what they're doing, I'd recommend looking at the source code.

3:08 "Mortis" is a word in Esperanto, but it means "died", not "death". However, it is the Latin word for "of death"

So I don’t want to destroy peoples illusions, but as a programmer I gotta say that it is almost impossible to know how much data is hosted on a webserver without being sufficiently privileged. So if somebody would have been able to gather that information, he would also know way more about mortis itself. Sounds like a proto internet conspiracy theory to me.

One user found pages of code after code in Mortis's source code, which hints at what is behind that Login screen, and I've seen this in something eerily similar recently after I stumbled upon a similar site that is linked to Cicada 3301, only instead there was stuff hidden in the webpage's source code to do with a puzzle that I finally solved on New Year's Day?

Government site. Designed to turn civilians away. Public domain access for secondary entry points. Undocumented death records. All the other sites were mirrors of similar data. Confidential files. Latin is the marker. NSA affiliated. It was never supposed to be discovered. All traces of the sites were removed from any active archives. Government affiliated protocol. International security.

could've upgraded to using a VPN tunnel
say wiregaurd or openvpnto access the website, that way unless you have the specific software + credentials it won't even load. VPN's became more common around the late 2010's. Wireguard was released in 2015.I agree with the self hosting videos and streaming theory, would explain the length went to remove and information on it. If it was me I'd want to remove as much as possible as well.
Alternatively he could be domain parking in order to sell it for a profit. Removing as much info to make sure potential buyers don't have to deal with the attention.
Lastly I don't understand how anyone wad able to determine how much data was being stored. The embedded video player, and the complex code, that adds up but how was anyone able to see the amount being stored/accessed without logging in?

someone should've copied and pasted all of the code w/o the login and uploaded it idk if it was possible but it's an idea

regardless of how long the terabytes of data were there for. a single site hosting THAT MUCH makes me highly suspicious at the idea of it being something innocent. pirating could be likely, but wiping a pirating website from the records? i dont trust it for a second.

I think it was someone or an agency that’s connected to the government. The only reason I say that is because of all the property and warehouses around the globe found under their name that are empty

If he was pirating terabytes worth of movies. Just who was he pirating them for? Because if he was sharing with large groups of people presumably someone would have come forward to verify you theory by now. Especially if all traces of the site no longer exist, theirs no harm in telling people. Also, you said yourself that it would be too expensive for most people to have terabytes worth of data. It doesnt make any sense. Based on the facts you've presented as I understand them. Unless whatever was being pirated was extremely illegal and/or embarrassing giving members an incentive to keep their mouths shut. And I dont think that admiiting to having downloaded the latest blockbuster in 1997 is illegal enough to encourage people to keep quiet.
I would be more inclined to believe it was run by a corporation or even a government that had sensitive information on it, like customers peronal info or credit card numbers. Something that could have made its employees sign NDA'S and thats why you haven't had someone come forward with the answer your looking for. But I could and often am wrong, so….
What I dont understand is why this site came to anyones attention in the first place. Surely this isnt the first website you've come accross that directs you to a login screen. Even in 1997 i'm sure there were lots. Cicada advertised its site and encouraged people to investigate. This is just a random website that could be quite litterally anything. Why the big mystery? Why not just move along to the next site.

As far as the large amount of data is concerned, isn't it likely that the web site was just misreporting how much data it had? Seems like it would be an easy thing to do. Or it could be procedurally generating the data on request instead of actually storing it.
@valmarsiglia
October 7, 2024 at 8:31 am
Esperanto? More relevantly, mortis is also Latin for "of death" or "from death."
