The Most Expensive Nepo Baby In Rock

The Strokes were supposed to save rock and roll. Five trust fund kids from Manhattan’s most elite boarding schools convinced the entire music press they were gritty, street-level garage rock heroes — and for about fifteen minutes, everyone bought it. Julian Casablancas, son of modeling billionaire John Casablancas, dictated every guitar line, every bass note, every drum beat to his bandmates like a tyrant running a sweatshop. They recorded their debut Is This It in a sub-basement studio for pennies, got signed to RCA after a UK bidding war, ripped off Tom Petty’s “American Girl” for their biggest hit “Last Nite” and openly admitted it. Then the backlash hit. Critics exposed their elite backgrounds. The second album sounded identical to the first. The clones they spawned — Kings of Leon, Franz Ferdinand — became bigger than them. By the third record, band members refused to be Julian’s puppets anymore, and the whole thing collapsed into separate tour buses, separate hotels, and an album literally recorded via email attachments because Julian wouldn’t be in the same room as his bandmates. They fulfilled their RCA contract with a deliberate middle finger of an album, vanished for years, then won their first Grammy twenty years into their career for an album made by five guys who can barely tolerate each other. What happened to The Strokes is the story of how manufactured authenticity, unchecked ego, and a complete refusal to evolve turned rock’s greatest hope into a traveling museum exhibit.
