The Moment She Told MTV To Go To Hell

Guitar Meets Science | June 28, 2026

This week, we delve into the tumultuous career of 90s alt-rock prodigy Fiona Apple, focusing on her explosive 1997 MTV VMAs speech and the ensuing “Free Fiona” battle against Sony Music. From the release of her triple-platinum debut *Tidal* and the controversial “Criminal” video to her decision to call out the industry as “bullshit,” we explore how a teenage poet fought for creative control. We’ll uncover the drama behind her record-breaking album title *When the Pawn*, the fan-led protest to release *Extraordinary Machine*, and her battles with the press and her own mental health. It’s the story of a raw talent who refused to be a puppet, eventually winning Grammys on her own terms with *Fetch the Bolt Cutters*. Kindly like and subscribe – it really helps this channel a lot. I do appreciate it!

I didn't really know any of this, so thank you for taking the time to share. It's always nice to hear when artists actually stand up and choose their art over being a part of the pop machine.

Saw Ms. Apple open for Coldplay back in 2006. She seemed coolly detached from the audience, thinking people weren't there to see her. The thing was that there were plenty of people there to see her, the place was packed, and they were screaming how much they loved her! Lots of, "Fiona, I love you!", between songs. She just played a perfunctory set, mustering showing all the excitement as if she was playing a corner dive bar, and left the stage to wild applause. I think it's her schtick to be nonchalant like that, and it definitely gives her that brooding artist vibe.

GMS 1) congrats on 1K+ subs!!! 2) your singing is getting better and better. 3) I can't believe that they're still trying to rip you off!!! 😬 Anyway, great video. I remember listening to "Criminal" on repeat. I can't believe that a teenager wrote that song. Liked, Subscribed, Thank You

Great video as always my fellow nerd. I'm close to starting my own channel and your a big Inspiration. I'm a big Fiona Apple fan , great to see her get some attention. Have you ever considered a video on Big Star?A lot of drama there. I'm a major Alex Chilton fan , one of my 5 biggest influence on what I write.

One of the many things I appreciate about your work is that you never get into the Hollywood/Music industry gossip by delving into really personal relationship BS. That stuff is some of the most vile stuff in media IMHO. You tell actual backgrounds and if you mention a relationship, you never go into being trashy about any of it.
