The Man With A 7-Second Memory | Answers With Joe

Clive Wearing lives life 7 seconds at a time. That’s because he has both retrograde and anterograde amnesia, which means he has no ability to form new memories and remembers nothing of his life before. It’s hard to imagine what it’s like to live like this, but his condition teaches us a lot about how we form memories and how the structure of the brain structures our lives.

As I am ASD and ADHD with many executive function issues and a terrible short term memory, I can some what relate to this.
Multiple times a day I forget what I'm doing and for a minute I get so confused. It gives me this extremely odd feeling of forgetting even what existence itself is and having to step back into my own life and reality. Used to freak me out when I was a kid (I thought it was a sort of a devouring void where space and time slip into nothingness) but now that I know why this happens, it feels safe and quiet and I really don't mind, I even kinda like it.

I would absolutely love to hang out with Clive. He reminds me of my dad at the end, after the first stroke and before the stroke that killed him, still one of the smartest and most charming people in the world but severely limited in his ability to communicate and absorb new information.

I just watched a story of people, of which there are only 10 known world wide, who can recall every that has happened to them every day from the age of around 10, and now this guy. I just realised though this one is male, the every day memory ones are female, I find that interesting.

I really like the depiction you did at the start of the video seems accurate, but it’ll be interesting to show it to the guy and see what he thinks

I had what he had back in 2022. I don't remember any of my time in the hospital or a lot of what happened the year before, but my family told me that while in the hospital, I never cried. And there were days where I would calmly ask where we were every few minutes. I believe I didnt have the ability to even begin to process the situation. However, I would regularly text friends and family to tell them I loved them.

The first PDA I ever saw was owned by a guy who said he lost his short term memory due to a brain injury, and so he used the PDA to keep notes on what he was doing and what he was meant to be doing.

Man… As someone who lives with DID… The similarities of the amnesia and the way that you can not even remember where the kitchen is but be perfectly proficient making a coffee when you get there… It's all quite similar to my own experience… Just on steroids and absolutely chronic … I wouldn't wish DID on my worst enemy, what this guy has I would even hesitate to wish on Hitler.

This man's story makes me want to cry. His relationship with his wife shows what undying love truly means. His Wife's love for him means the same thing.
Let's hope that Clive lives the sweetest life that he can.

His siezuring after playing the piano made me think of when you're driving a car, which is in the wrong gear so you bunny hop. His brain was in the wrong gear 😂

Raycon is not high-quality audio for half the cost. It is closer to 3x the cost for shit audio. Stop lying to your followers for easy money, we used to respect you

12:49 You say “He wasn’t missing her when she was gone. When she wasn’t there he had no idea she existed”. Sorry, but this is categorically untrue. There is a clip in the Equinox documentary Prisoner of Consciousness when his wife listens to many many answerphone messages left by Clive on her own phone. It is heartbreaking because each one is him begging her to come and see him again, mere minutes after she has left him. He definitely does remember her and miss her very much.

Joe watched the documentary and just repeating what he learned from it. Joe offers nothing new. What a scam of a video. Even repeating things verbatim. He couldn't even be bothered to write it in his own words.

Stroke victims sometimes have parts of their memory wiped out. I read an article years ago about a mathematician who had part of his memory effected by a stroke and he couldn't do even simple addition and subtraction at all anymore. However, he could still quantify. He knew that 6 objects are more than 5 objects; when asked how many eggs are in a dozen he would answer "about ten", and when asked how many days are in a year he would say "about 300". He never answered 650, and 50, respectively. It turns out that numbers exist in many different areas of our brains.

His procedural memory stayed, but his declarative memory didn’t. I have seizures.. during the most severe kind when I wake up there is nothing. No time, no place, no self. I can’t imagine living like that all the time.

You avoided so many implicit jokes (Joe-ks). Good on you, I guess. (He wouldn't know.) Yes. I'm terrible. I'm also epileptic. I've awakened in hospitals too many times, not knowing where, when, or even who I am. It's kinda funny, being told, "I know you," by EMTs. "You're the one who asked if I remembered the president?" I respond

The guy in the opening montage lives 10 times as much life as I do! Tennis, car show, lunch date, interacting with a stranger. That kind of thing happens like once a year XD

This is a very good video. But I wish you didn't make those offhanded jokes. This stuff is devastating. The jokes make it seem like you're making light of it all. I don't think you really feel that way, so please drop the jokes when it's a topic like this.

Music can be pretty crazy. A lot of people who stutter are able to sing normally, with no stutter but immediately start again when they go back to talking.
