The Lowtimers, “Thunderstorms,” // GemsOnVHS™
Back at the Jackalope Jamboree festival in the little town of Pendleton, Oregon again this year. My 2nd annual trip thus far. I love it because they are down in the dirt, the real down, real people playing real music with real passion. Nothing gets me going like a van full of sweaty dudes, high off a couple months of nonstop touring, misery, bad food, inside jokes and a lack of exercise. That’s what I saw when I met my guys The Lowtimers. They crawled out the van just long enough to fill this old rehearsal space that local legend Addison Schulberg uses to mess around with his own local bands.
Addison is the 2nd generation owner/operator of The Great Pacific, a historic downtown restaurant that also hosts bands. He’s a DIY punk, and also a town Councilman. That’s how you know you’ve found good people. I can’t express to you how much I love mixing music, culture, community and passion for all of it. As soon as he heard me and the guys were looking for a spot to play some tunes, he jumped at the opportunity to host us in his little rehearsal space, and next thing I know he’s running the mics for a full garageband setup for us. This is the type of energy it takes to be a mover and shaker, and he is. And that’s just another part of the magic of the Jackalope Jamboree – local folks stepping up to celebrate music, life and their community. We drank beers and talked for hours after about recording, the town and the challenges in it.
I’d actually heard about the Lowtimers from their last iteration, Smith and Tegio. I’d put a couple tunes of theirs on our monthly playlist. They were at the previous Jamboree and we’d talked a bit. Cool dudes, great sound, good energy all around. I’m excited to see and hear what they get up to next.
