The Kinks’ Waterloo Sunset: The Day Ray Davies Wrote His Masterpiece
Ray Davies of The Kinks held onto a melody for years before waking up one morning with the completed song at his fingertips. This is the basis for “Waterloo Sunset” from 1967, one of The Kinks’ most beloved songs. For this story we go back to the beginning, because “Waterloo Sunset” is about the formative years of Ray, the loss of his sister on his birthday, the place he healed after almost dying himself, where he went to college, and where his parents told him the future was possible.

It was originally written/intended to be Liverpool Sunset and about the death of Merseybeat. Ray has spoken about this. I live in Liverpool and the area I live in is called…Waterloo. So when I listen to it the River Thames and its Waterloo becomes the River Mersey and my Waterloo. What a glorious song. My mum says when my dad was a young man that he reminded her of Dave Davies. I love The Kinks so much. They don't have as many great albums as The Beatles do but that doesn't mean that I love them any less than my fellow Liverpudlians.
