Ah, hammerheads. Easily the strangest sharks on the planet. But they’re not the only hammerheads in the animal kingdom. Today, we’ll be exploring why nature let this happen. Enjoy!

little known fact about the Tully Monster is that it was originally poisons vacuum cleaner and he would hold it by the eye stalks, the Tully monster themselves would use the eyestalks in an intimidation ritual where they would fight each other using their eye stalks as swords and this is how they found out their mating hierarchy.

Perhaps the Tully monster evolved the long eye stalks first, like the hammer head shark. And over time the stalks and mouth shrink to become more cephilopod like š

Nonbinarybrate
@ekhaat
August 9, 2025 at 7:19 pm
Why? Because that mutation did not give them enough disadvantage to make them go under, and they were isolated enough to not be diluted in the gene pool.

Non-binary-tabrate made me howl. Thanks for making my day š Also, one interesting thing about hammerhead-style eye placement is that when the interpupillary distance is increased like that, it can make binocular vision work better at long distances. So you'd lose binocular vision up close, but you'd be able to gauge the distance of things farther away very well. I don't know whether it would necessarily be evolutionarily advantageous, but there ya go.

August 9, 2025 at 7:19 pm
The Tully Monster's eyes WERE mobile, solely so it could make "woogie woogie" noises as it waved them around. This was the opposite of a mating ritual, and is likely the primary reason they went extinct.

The Tully monster had yes are on stalks sideways because you needed a way to hold on to it when you are riding it like a motorcycle.
