RICHIE FAULKNER on KK Downing 🎸 New GNR drummer, KATATONIA split & more | Metal Digest #10/25

Metal Pilgrim | March 12, 2026

Guns N’ Roses announce their split with the drummer Frank Ferrer, as well as the name of their new drummer – Isaac Carpenter, and Katatonia announce split with their founding member Anders Nyström after more than 30 years of working together.

Richie Faulkner of Judas Priest talks about KK Downing and once again shows why he is one of the coolest dudes in Metal. Exodus work on not one, but two new studio albums at a time.

Sleep Token beat Selena Gomez with their new single, taking Number 1 spot in iTunes charts. Disturbed vocalist David Draiman is filing a lawsuit against his landlord. New releases by The Haunted, Cradle of Filth, Drudkh, Pop Evil, Malevolence and much more.

Metal is alive and well, so let’s see what keeps it going today. Here you go!

Richie Faulkner was accepted by the fans because he replaced a guitarist, despite his first album sounding little better than a demo.
Ripper wasn't accepted because he replaced a front man, despite his first album being an absolute banger (if Pantera wrote those riffs, it'd be on every metalhead's top-10 albums of all time).
The metal community is devastatingly nostalgic when it comes to classic metal bands.

Heartbroken about the Katatonia news! It was tough enough having drummer Daniel Liljekvist leave — has it really been 11 years ago? — but the Jonas-Anders duo continued to keep the band running on all cylinders.

    New music:
Ok, I finally got to see @Raging Speedhorn live last week after being a fan for 25 years. Been listening to their new album. Not their best, but has a good few bangers!
I'm going to see @Bloodywood with my partner and step-son this week. Their new album is killer!
Also recently discovered @The Grudge, @Mothercow, @Asomvel and @The Gulls (more Hard/Southern Rock than Metal), Venom Inc (I know, I'm late to the party on that one), @Cancerslug, @Plan 9 (Horror Punk) and @Abysmal Grief (If you like Cradle Of Filth or Dimmu Borgir, deffinitly check them out!) And I think my favourite new Metal band has to be @Mind Insission https://youtube.com/channel/UCwvpU5ZFfatiSzK2aoAtXUg?si=O7wUZErPEX18fxtT 🤘🏽🤘🏽

Good luck to Isac, but I feel like Matt Sorum returning and especially if they could get Steven Adler in if only for a few special appearances it would have given G N' R some much needed credibility

Am I the only one that had no idea they (GnR) were back together? Let's be serious, until they put a damn album out this is just more Bullshit. I'm not even sure I'd want to hear anything from them at this point. Chinese Democracy was pretty shitty.

Sorry mate, the crap bands at the start of this video aren’t metal & who cares about Bums & Posers (GunsnRoses)
This is probably why your subscribers drop off at times

Correct me if I’m wrong but hasn’t Katatonia’s music has been largely written by Jonas for at least the last two albums? They have always progressed musically and I personally love their new stuff. Its okay to not like it but I think its a little weird to expect Jonas to jump the project that has been largely his for years now. Even so it’s very sad that Anders has finally left but I’m excited for him to start writing again.

In regards to Exodus' double burger, that's all and well BUT I do hope for a few things :
    – that the albums are a tad better than "Persona Non Grata" as I'm not the biggest fan of that one
    – that they are more evenly balanced than "Exhibit A"/"Exhibit B", the second one having a few fillers
    – that it doesn't mean no new Heathen or Prototype LP's for the foreseeable future either, since they share personnel with Exodus

We can all agree that those of us who gather here in the Metal Pilgrim circle are simply not made to like bands like Sleep Token. To be honest, I've never listened to them… and I don't intend to change that.

The Katatonia split sucks. But I can understand Blakkheim. To somehow ignore live the albums from 1997 to 2006 is not cool anymore.

Thought maybe I didn't give Sleep Token a fair shake, so I fired up one of their videos . . .
I don't get it. Is it just the stage makeup? It sounds like the music played at my gym and finishes as heavy radio rock. I guess it's better than another Selena Gomez song.
This week I'm revisiting Igorrr's last album (music with true punch and purpose) in anticipation of a new release.

This is my comment on Sleep Token music…all in one and not at all. I guess I'm also not a fan. Anyway…congrats on the charts.
