This sort of (but not completely) reminds me of a Something Awful user named 50 Foot Ant. He was an incredible storyteller, who would post stories infrequently enough that you'd immediately recognize his name (at first) and he would post there extremely well-written stories that struck the perfect balance of being interesting/entertaining, yet realistic enough that they never made you start to doubt if they really happened. I completely fell for them, until I started to remember his name, and after a while it seemed totally implausible that one person would be in so many different situations/jobs/encounters that would lead to so many interesting things happening to him. He never promoted any books or anything though.
