Pine & Fire playing at their house in MINNESOTA!

GemsOnVHS | June 15, 2026

We went up to Wisconsin to hang out with my pal Jason Dea West this past spring, visiting his family farm. On the way I had to check off a bucket list item, a little detour to the home of Jobi from the duo Pine and Fire. They had been to Nashville a number of times, coming to Gems shows and opening for friends of mine. They’re good friends with Gems super friends Matt and Gina out in East TN. Hell, they even stayed at the Treehouse for the Smithville Jamboree in my little town. But somehow I hadn’t made it to the frigid north, and we hadn’t put together a recording with them.

So after a show they played with Jason in Duluth, I shot back to stay a night with them somewhere in the sleepy land between there and Minneapolis, carefully avoiding both jaywalking deer and ice spots. We recorded this double feature, in the small house and wood barn they’ve been working on. I’ve always loved the raucous sound they produce, reminding me of that vintage Avett Brother’s energy. They’re doing it for the right reasons too, not for money or fame but because music is their lifeblood. We even managed to fit in a Fortnite dub.

Shoutout to premiere gooner Ross Thorn for helping with recording this one with me.

Gems super fan checking in. Great video yall. Its a great day seeing 2 of my favorites things come together. The first time I heard pine and fire they blew my socks off. I hope that others have that or a more explosive reaction. They are excellent musicians and better people. Love all yall who made this coolness happen.

    Doves Can't Fly lyrics:

Doves can't fly where the drones roam high over
    Hungry sighs and broken stone
There's an olive branch burned in a small child's hand
Mothers' cries inside a shattered home
Our Uncle Sam's got a real heavy hand, he
Writes his checks in blood and bone
Then calls it peace, but it smells like smoke
And it chokes out the dreams of the families he broke

    History don't need a clock;
It just circles back like a wave form the dock
From the land of the free, to the shores of Falastin
We're paying for the suffering of fellow human beings
And if that's not enough to make you wanna scream
Then no words that I write, no song that I sing
Will save your soul, from your day of reckoning

Well here at home, blood stains the snow
You can hear the whistle blows and people's cries
You best lock your doors and hold your neighbours close
The men in masks are lockin' folks up left and right
Now I coulda sworn we've seen this before
It's well past the time to draw a line
Where will you stand when the future looks back
And asks how we got to this point?

    Well history don't need a pen;
It just scrawls on again and again and again
With prisons' and borders' men following orders
    Truth has never come cheap
But I'd rather know and sow seeds of hope
Than live like I'm still asleep
When you're planting graves what kind of future
    Do you think you'll reap?

    Dance on the Ashes lyrics:

Who I was yesterday is already gone
And who I am today isn't who I'll be for long
I have been so hurt and I've been strung along
And I have been the one to make things go wrong
Oh, I have been the one to make things go wrong

And I have lost some people that I loved and adored
Over unresolved feelings from what came before
On my end and theirs and even on yours
We all carry something that we didn't ask for
We all carry something that we didn't ask for

Sometimes I feel so small that I can't get out of bed
And other times I feel like the best that's ever lived
But most of the time I'm somewhere in-between
Take my good with the bad and hope that I find peace
Take my good with the bad and hope that I find peace

See I ain't upset, no not any more
'Cause that's not what livin' and dyin' is for
I screamed and I cried, I swore and I yearned
Then I danced on the ashes of the bridges that I've burned
I danced on the ashes of the bridges that I've burned
