Todd in the Shadows | August 1, 2026

Katrina and the Waves caught a wave of sunshine in the mid-’80s, but what happened when the clouds started rolling in?

At the part post-Sunshine where Katrina's trying to catch up with the trends and sing what's popular, she ends up sounding like proto-Shania Twain. This is a band that could potentially have created "Man I Feel Like a Woman", and that is not a compliment.

Trumpet player here… Walking on Sunshine isn't too hard. But the repetitiveness can wear you down some if you're not careful. Gotta pace yourself some or fracking notes will come fast and furious

This is one of those songs you associate with a place. For me that place was on vacation in a tourist trap restaurant in Mackinaw City a couple of years ago with my kids & this song came on after we ordered. An unrivaled moment of Americana.

That video of this song from Jenny Nicholson's church play cinematic universe is written on my heart. He turned it into an act of bravery. I'm walking on sunshine… WOARGH

I use this song whenever anyone around me is feeling sad. I crank it up ever since that scene in high fidelity. It has like a 7% success rate in making ppl happy. And a 100% success rate at making me happy cause i am driving my friends nuts

Hey hey hey, we were bombing at Eurovision long before Brexit!

And you're completely right about our attitude towards Eurovision. I watch it to make fun of it because Europe's musical taste is usually 10-20 years behind ours. Although in recent years it's gotten less weird and outlandish and a lot cleaner and more bland. No more rapping grannies, just skinny guys writhing around the floor and wailing. Dire.

Little known fact: the tune for this song was originally used for a song called "Canción de Amores" in 1973. Which itself was stolen from "I'm Cryin' (With My Eyes)" that came out in 1967

Are you following a certain chart (US?) or is this your own opinion? I think it's unfair to call them a one hit wonder when they have been active from '81 to '99 with 11 albums to their credit. I don't think they would have lasted as long as they did if they weren't producing "hits" for the record label. It seems you regularly do this with "one hit wonders". Perhaps if you were truthful and really did an actual one hit wonder video there actually might not be much material to work with but would still be very entertaining where you can talk about the hit and how they exited the music industry entirely. In the 80's many artists would say "Once you have a #1 song, you can retire" and many of them did. Guess the royalties were really good.

My main takeaway is that I need to go listen to the Bangles again. Sort of forgot about them but after two mentions in the video am now remembering they were pretty damn good.

It's not as happy as 'Loop De Loop (flip flop flying in an airplane)' which is by, you guessed it! The Beach Boys. They sure always 'get around' to these stinkers huh?
