No Bass Players. They Were Annoying.

Guitar Meets Science | June 24, 2026

In the 1990s, Local H became the unlikely kings of post-grunge with a Gold record and a massive radio hit, only to watch their career get systematically destroyed by a corporate merger and a label that stopped answering the phone. We trace the origins of Scott Lucas and Joe Daniels, who invented a unique guitar modification to fire their bass players, leading to the creation of the duo that dominated rock radio with “Bound for the Floor.” Despite the critical acclaim of their masterpiece *Pack Up the Cats*, the Universal Music Group buyout orphaned the band, leaving them to fight for survival in the music industry gutter. From touring in a gorilla suit and auctioning themselves on eBay to winning a fan-voted contest to open for Metallica, this is the story of the ultimate “lifer” band who refused to quit. This VST plugin, The Stereo Sound Extractor, is BADASS -I coded it up from over 10 year’s hard research. It won awards. Now you can own it for the paltry sum of $29. Yup, I’m basically giving it away: https://burninguitfiddle.gumroad.com/l/rbiuu

Loved these guys ever since As Good As Dead first dropped when I was 16. Finally had a chance to see them at The Paradise in Boston on that 2020 tour with Soul Asylum. Now, I like Soul Asylum just fine, so I don’t say this to diss them, but honestly, they were an afterthought once I heard that Local H was opening.

As I expected, they stole the show.

Just thinking about what if every time a band had a falling out with a bassist and instead of finding a new guy or gal to fill the slot they got inventive and made a new type of mutant guitar that incorporates the chords and wiring needed for the type of sound they were going

my favorite thing about local h is that when i auto play them on shuffle you can't tell if a song is old or new they haven't changed or degraded an ounce newest album still sounds great.

i was in high school when i first heard Local H. Ham Fisted got a lot of play in my CD player. We in Chicago had our own contributions to the alternative sound. Local H, the Pumpkins, Urge Overkill and Veruca Salt to name a few.

Local H are a legendary band. They should have been what Nirvana became. They're just so good. Thanks for covering this band buddy. Keep them coming

    I get why they don't want a bass player…
A bass players mom isn't always able to drive them to rehearsals & that can be a real bummer for the rest of the band…

I'm sure you heard of The Scorpions. My older Cousin told me about a band called UFO with Michael Scheckner. He is the brother of Rudolf Scheckner. Can you do a video on them?

Lol funny perspective, Scott asked me to play bass for their Metro show after Matt moved away. I declined (too busy – already in 2 bands, school and job). I worked with Scott at Subway in Zion. We were Zion, musician band guys. Our jam studio was attached to theirs in Zion, tho I never saw them there. I always thought that they were lucky that I declined because that Metro show was the show that got signed as a Power-Duo.

Another case of producers ruining music. With the right support I think they could have went further. My son is a young teen and he likes Local H, the music they did get out there holds up.

Love the H. Saw them well over 15+ times over the years, always incredible. Caught them at the Troubadour in LA where they pulled an album out of a hat – Here Comes the Zoo – in full, plus an encore. Legends.

I drummed in a band that opened up for them three times. The first time a big fight broke out. I was a HUGE fan before I opened up for them ,so one off the bucket list. The band i was in went to a party in St Loius that was put on by another band that toured with them (Sullen). It was way too wild. And I dont even drink. It sucked for me. Neuro divergence is hard( non autistic) I couldnt socialize so I slept. LOLOLOOL

So weird getting old and seeing these vids made by people whos parents hadn't seen each other tell us what was going down in the 90s. I'm left wondering how much of the content Ive consumed about the 60s was total bogus burgers. Oh well. Still making art a 40. Trying to find another reason to type numerals. Happy 2383!!!

Very underrated band. I slept on this band for 25 years. I knew Bound to the Floor from back in the day but that was it. I took a deep dive back in 2020. And I was pretty mad at myself for not listening to them sooner.
