Alice in Chains’ MTV Unplugged: Food Poisoning, Withdrawal, and Layne Staley’s Defining Night
This is the full story behind Alice in Chains’ MTV Unplugged (1996): how Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell, Sean Kinney and Mike Inez ended up on a candlelit Brooklyn stage after two and a half years off the road. It’s a story of a trash can beside Cantrell’s stool, Metallica in the front rows, and a song that fell apart in front of the label’s executives. From the band’s origins through their alternative rock rise to the era that led to the April 10, 1996 taping at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Majestic Theater, this is why the acoustic set sounded so different from their heavy electric records. We’ll also cover how critics and fans received the album, which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and is back on vinyl this fall for its 30th anniversary.

Ok to clarify, the band did not write significantly more of the self titled alice in chains album than Layne. Layne contributed a lot. On previous albums Jerry would write songs for Layne to sing. Like them Bones or rooster. But starting with jar of flies, the new rule was, "if you write it, you sing it." So Jerry wrote and sang 3 songs on the self titled, with layne harmonizing and singing backing vocals, heven beside you, over now and grind. The rest of the album's lyrics are all Layne. He even wrote the riff and music to head creeps himself. So he wrote a lot more than usual this time around.

Great video, Andy. “No Excuses” is my favorite AIC song because it shows they had variety in their songs. “No Excuses” has a great pop feel to it…
One thing, Andy…and I apologize for being “That Guy”, but…I think you meant to say they had sales of 141 “Thousand” and 189 “Thousand” copies of “Jar of Flies” and “Alice In Chains”, respectively…not 141 and 189.
