NFT Podcast Ep. 24: The Quick and the Dead (1995)

Native Film Talk podcast | June 4, 2026

The Quick and the Dead! How the hell did this movie manage to get this much star power!? Sharon Stone, Russell Crowe, Leonardo DiCaprio, Gene Hackman, and Jonothon Gill (Spotted Horse)!? Native actor that arguably has the most suspenseful gun fight in the film!

Combine a single elimination tournament with a spoof western, you get one of the best westerns of all time…yeah I went there!

This movie was an homage to the western drama while being an exaggeration of all the classic western characters. Cowboy with no name, person who sleeps on dynamite, villian who runs the town out of fear, and the man sworn to never killing again. Among of these was the Native! Can’t pay respect to the western genre without a Native. How did this movie do? Overall, it’s better than the western genre as a whole but it fell flat at times. Listen as I explore the representation, positive and negative. Enjoy!

Love this movie. It's a solid once a year watch in my household. The camera work has Sam Raimi's signature all over it with those high powered dolly zooms and dutch angles. I suspect the Dia de Los Muertos scene was cut because it would have disrupted the pacing of the film.

I think Spotted Horse joined the tournament to prove his own legend to himself. His story is shown not told in the scene where he takes off his shirt and makes his boast.

You used the word "allude" or "alluding to" a lot this episode. In some instances foreshadowing might have served your purpose better. Like with Lady's deceit tactic being foreshadowed or Spotted Horse's surprising rise from the dead being foreshadowed by the shirtless scene.

The films a master class of proper film making: set up, pay off, set up, pay off.
