Mike Portnoy Reacts To His Son’s Favorite Dream Theater Songs

Drumeo | June 21, 2026

Mike Portnoy joins his son Max Portnoy for their first in-depth conversation exploring life on the road, early tour memories, and how Max was shaped by growing up around Dream Theater. They break down some of Mike’s most iconic recordings, including “Take The Time”, “Beyond This Life”, “This Dying Soul”, “Octavarium”, “The Dark Eternal Night”, and more—unpacking the stories, recording approaches, and musical ideas behind each era.

The discussion also dives deep into the evolution of Mike’s legendary drum kits, from the original Dream Theater setup to the various “Monster” kits that defined different phases of his career.

Throughout the interview, Mike and Max bring these classic Dream Theater moments to life with multiple drum jams, culminating in an open-ended final jam session on Mike’s “Dream Monster” drum kit.

Happy fathers day to the Dream Theater Dads. One of the biggest points of respect I have for these guys is how they've held their families together despite the challenges they've surely faced, Mike in particular with his commitment to sobriety. I always found that side of the band quite inspiring in addition to the music and playing. That ability to remain professional and yet still attack the projects with passion and not slide off the rails on the road.

Not an easy thing to do particularly when you're successful. I'll always have a soft spot for James Hetfield in that regard as well because, clearly that was a tough ditch to haul himself out of not once, but twice, that I know of anyway.

Your blast beats on Nightmare are sound Mike. Yeah, there's some incredible black and death metal demons out there, but it's really right for the song and well executed. It has a punch and clarity about it that some blasts lack.

It's a weird feeling. I was born when Mike was 16, and Max was born when I was 16. But while I can understand/remember most of what Mike is talking about, Max seems like someone from another planet to me.

The more I learn about this band, the more I grow to love them. I do hope Mike gets to do that Twelve-Step Suite full playthrough with DT live.

Every song with the "co lead vocal" ends up being the worst. Constant motion being the #1 worst. That's why Systematic Chaos and Black Clouds are the 2 worst DT albums, way too much of that. DT sounded so fresh when Portnoy left for that exact reason, finally the singer could sing without having to stoop down to someone else's ability level and the drummer just drummed.

80's hair metal had 2 phases: Late 80's would be the 'Hobo Biker Pirates' phase; Before that was the 'Transvestite Hooker Clowns' phase.™
I still listen to all of it.

I’m honestly so over watching this drum channel. It’s like they don’t have any other guest stars. I have huge respect for Portnoy, but I'm really not a fan of how he dominates the channel. I skipped

Drumeo, I hate you – I want to minimize my screen time to 2 hours daily, but I just spent over 3 hours to watch 'playing for the first time' episodes.
I am not a musician at all, just occasionally playing some fingerstyle on a guitar, but your channel is by far the most expirational and motivational one on Youtube. This is what should be here. Thank you so much for all your work, Drumeo team!
