Mathematician Michael Rios discusses his recent E8-related work with physicist David Chester about a special projection of E8 under a subalgebra SU(3) that makes a star pattern, and encodes six copies of an exceptional quantum mechanics algebra that is 27-dimensional.
The center of the star contains E6, another, smaller exceptional Lie algebra that contains the symmetry of the 27-dimensional algebras.
If we consider the center column of the star we recover the E7 exceptional Lie algebra, and it acts as the symmetry of the left and right vertical columns of the star, each 56 dimensional. Using these columns, we can see E8 acting as a non-linear symmetry of a 57-dimensional charge space of an extreme black hole.
Mike then explains that there exist higher stars, that can be shown to exist through new mathematics called “Exceptional Periodicity.” The higher algebras encoded by these stars generalize E8 and the other exceptional Lie algebras. The 27-dimensional algebra is generalized to T-algebras in the six star vertices of these higher stars. The higher star algebras are no longer Lie algebras but are more general algebras that resemble “lattice vertex algebras.”
