What a great review, Abigail. Oddly enough, the first Love record I got was a cutout cassette of their Studio/Live album featuring the lost Forever Changes lineup. I played that thing till the tape snapped. When I finally got to hear Forever Changes, it was jarring to my ears and didn’t pick it up again until the 2008 reissue came out. Now it’s one of my favorite album. I basically started backwards with Love. Their place in the pantheon of 60’s rock legends needs to be better represented. Thanks for putting in the work on such an important band. Especially being a multi-racial group. POC rockers United!

PS- I will forever kick myself for not going to see Love with the Zombies at the Park West in Chicago. I ended up going to see the rather boring Black Hearts Procession 😢

Eagles' favorite, the Truba-Doer, was that intentional? What do you make of Arthur Lee's final days and incarceration, he deserves an expunged record and higher praise… man was at Gastenbury!!

I was born in 1966, yet it wasn't until 70s HR band UFO covered Love that I became aware, only 10 in 1976. UFO cover Alone Or is the best one there is, it's flawless, and I did have it on vinyl original purchase even if it was used, on an allowance hahaha

Love is one of my favourite bands of all time… I learned a thing or two I wasn't aware of here. (ie. The Little Red Book and Interstellar Overdrive connection). The only criticism is the pronunciation of da capo. It is supposed to be Da – KAY-po… similarly to the device guitarists attach to their guitar. The album itself, da capo, is one of those records that sound better in mono; even Revelation sounds more 'live' in this format. Great video all around. Perhaps in the future a video about Arthur Lee's "Vindicator"lp could be made ? I'd imagine it has a crazy back story to it as well. Cheers!

Great stuff, thanks. The big question is always: how good would Da Capo have been with a side 2 like side 1? Probably the American Revolver.

For what it's worth it's been said that the Interstellar Overdrive riff also sounds very much like the intro theme music to the very popular UK tv comedy show Steptoe and Son. And it really does, I don't think Syd stole it per se but knowing what a trickster he was he probably had a bit of a chuckle when the fact either dawned on him or was pointed out to him. Interesting to see Pat and Lolly Vegas' names on the billboard in an early clip – pre Redbone. Great stuff Abby!

You are underestimating the power of that first album cover. I was a senior in high school when it came out and bought the album because the cover was in color, and the back side was not a little black and a lot of white (aka little info), 1966 was the year that drained my wallet for albums, not singles. The year started slowly, but by the time of "Da Capo," a slew of great albums came out. Love's debut did have some weaker songs, but there were no dogs on it either. An album with 14 tracks seemed like a gift at the time, but having no song be a stinker raised the floor when judging this record. "Da Capo" has a first side that, minimally, was one of the best three sides released in the sixties. The revelation of 'Revelation' was play side one instead. That's how it felt (to me) at the time but each listener has his (or her) own set of previous listening experiences.

hello abigail devoe. i think you are the only youtube record reviewer that i would trust to cover lou reeds coney island baby and/or street hassle. your insight, observations, and research skills are unsurpassed, and your ability to look at sensitive and dark topics with a frankness and understanding would be perfect for either or both of these records. many people also either ignore the lou and rachel relationship that played a huge part in the influence and making of these records, or are grossly transphobic to rachel (looking at you, lester bangs). your videos are always great including this one about love. your video for transformer where you did not shy away from or glorify the darker and more troubling aspects of not only the lyrical content but also the real life background and production. the other one was for transformer where you not only did not shy away from the queer and subversive risque topics, but you embraced them and discussed the honestly and unbiased. your specific calling out of transphobic bullshit also stood out to me, and i thank you for that. sorry for a long and rambling comment/request, but i just want to say that i think you would be not only perfect to do these albums, but a blessing to their legacy. thanks!

PS if your interested, check out the recent super in depth interview with godfrey diamond on lou reeds youtube channel about the production if coney island baby. its fantastic.

    You've been clothes shopping again haven't you?…
Also your hair is looking amazing this week!
I'm just going to comment on ST for the moment- because it's late…
Its such a great capture of that live energy isn't it? Also, an album that sounds so great in mono (thanks Spotify for the choice!)…
Its clearly such an influence on early punk – try telling me The Ramones didn't have a copy of this album when they started out….

This is my favorite album by them, Forever Changes is technically "better" but for me this is the one. It's hard to beat the first side, and with Revelation I think they pioneered a lot of what was to come with the extended jams that the Grateful Dead ended up becoming so well known for. But if there's one album that can send you back to a gorgeous LA evening in 1966 it would probably be this.

The Stones were in LA recording Aftermath at RCA studios in December of 65, and famously hung out in Laurel Canyon, and frequented the Sunset Strip scene while there. The math totally checks out that they would have seen Love performing this, and hastened to put Goin' Home on their record before Love would manage to put Revelation on Da Capo. It also makes more sense that they would have seen Love doing Revelation live and copped it for their song rather than Love hearing Going Home on a record and copping that for their live show and eventually their record… At any rate, both songs were among the first to exceed 10 minutes along with Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands, and The Return of the Son of Monster Magnet, all released within a few months of each other.
