Losing Power on the Seabed | Last Moments

Qxir | November 18, 2025

For this video we’re taking a trip down under the sea. And staying there…

“The nuclear-powered Oscar-class submarine Kursk (Russian: Project 949A Антей Atomnaya Podvodnaya Lodka “Kursk” (APL “Kursk”)) sank in an accident on 12 August 2000 in the Barents Sea, during the first major Russian naval exercise in more than ten years, and all 118 personnel on board were killed. The crews of nearby ships felt the initial explosion and a second, much larger, explosion; yet the Russian Navy did not realise that an accident had occurred and did not initiate a search for the sub for more than six hours. Because the submarine’s emergency rescue buoy had been intentionally disabled during an earlier mission, it took more than 16 hours to locate the sunken boat.
Over four days, the Russian Navy repeatedly failed in its attempts to attach four different diving bells and submersibles to the escape hatch of the submarine. Its response was criticised as slow and inept. Officials misled and manipulated the public and news media, and refused help from other governments. President Vladimir Putin initially continued his vacation at a seaside resort; he authorised the Russian Navy to accept British and Norwegian offers of assistance after five days had passed since the accident. Seven days after the sinking, British and Norwegian divers finally opened a hatch to the escape trunk in the boat’s flooded ninth compartment but found no survivors. The Government of Russia and the Russian Navy were intensely criticised over the incident and their responses.”

I remember wondering if they would have been rescued had russia accepted help. Such a shame that even after the end of the cold war, they couldnt take good intentions when offered.
Edit: it's just disgusting that the government of Russia chose to let their boys die alone in the darkness instead of accepting help. People ask, why do i have such an issue with Russia, and this is a good example. His pride and ego comes before anything or anyone.

Damn! They just gave her a shot without giving a single solitary fuck! You say "sedative" but who the fuck knows what was in that fucking syringe. These are the Russians after all so who the fuck knows!

Watching this in October of 2024 and looking at Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, there’s no reason it should have come as a shock that the Russian military has been underperforming from what it said it’s standards are. In 24 years, nothing has changed about the Russian government. Those who were upset about the Kursk not being rescued soon enough were silenced. Those who opposed putin’s war in Ukraine were silenced.

A lot of people see the Kursk disaster as the true end of the Cold War. Many believe it was very much in effect as evidenced by their desperation to preserve their Nation’s image if it meant the loss of 100+ lives.
Also, Matt Elliott has a great song about the Kursk, called “The Kursk”. There’s also longer documentsties and more information online you should definitely look in to. This was in 2000. Fairly recent, and it’s absolutely disgusting. A completely preventable massive loss of life.

Edit: also great video. Very informative, and in my opinion you covered some of the most important details, Kalashnikov’s writing especially.

I remember this on the news…tensions got VERY high, as the US didnt know what happened, and feared that the Russians may suspect the US of foul play (I mean…cant blame them)

Lots of bad juju in 2000 and that era in general. Columbia, and of course 911.

The one thing about the Kursk, for the survivors of the initial blasts, is that I think they were lucky in a sense. As having served 11 years in the USAF right after 911, I can say this. I would rather go slowly, then without even knowing. Ive faced such moments, not knowing if I would live another second, if the thing went off, hoping our radios were far enough away when we reported it. It was big. The kind of big that you knew, you wouldnt even have time to feel a burn, or see a flash.

I hated that uncertaintly, to the point that any IED gives me that panic, after the moment, where I wonder, if I actually made it out, and if what I was feeling was just a vivid pre mortem dream, taking place in the blnik of an eye. Im actually wondering that too. Would explain the clown world that is 2024. If that is the case, I hope the world turned out more peaceful and sane, and that I got a badass statue. Back then, Dio and Lemmy were still alive, and Id like to think theyd get together with Manowar, Megadeth and Judas Priest to do a song about how we went out, fearlessly. That would be metal. (If you knew the things Ive survived, all this would make a lot more sense. That, or maybe God has some plan for me)

But until then, I trek onward. Btw, Ive known your channel for a LONG time, but only recently binged and subbed (hah…terrible pun). Youre sarcasm and wit, and even views on certain…government-y topics is very satisfying. But then again, you could be a creation of my mind in that fraction of a second before the shokwave vaportized me into mist. Red mist would also be a metal name of that above mentioned song.

Cheers, from an American of distant heritage, one could say the Irish of Eastern Europe. Romania

Yeah Russia, China, North Korea, basically all the middle east… They all lie about everything. Idiots ashamed of themselves like children who disobey their parents.

Classic russians not caring any shit about their men dying horribly in a submarine and then refusing help at first and then trying to drug the families that are screaming at putin.

I'm glad you found that footage of the woman being sedated. I remember seeing it years ago and telling ppl this story about how crazy Russia is , then I couldn't find it and no one believes me.

Okay.. why don't submarines have escape pods? Military submarines easily could, one would think.. idk. I'd still jump in one at a moment's notice 😀 "I just got it! Never ridden in it before; taking her to the bottom of the sea. No escape pods.." "SIGN ME UP!"
