Let Down: The Radiohead Song That Nearly Broke the Band Then Became a Hit 28 Years Later

Poetic Wax | February 17, 2026

In 2025, a Radiohead song nearly 3 decades old hit the charts. But here’s the catch, back in 1997, Thom Yorke thought it “too pretty” to be on OK Computer, and it nearly tore the band apart. This is the story of “Let Down,” how it defined OK Computer, how it almost ended Radiohead, and how it became their first chart hit since 2008 almost 3 decades after its original release.

CORRECTION: Bedroom. Yeah, that was a Freudian slip on my part 😂 Didn’t catch it during editing…
NEXT: 2025 was a big year for Radiohead. In addition to "Let Down" entering the charts 28 years late, they made a triumphant return. In the next video, I dig into their long hiatus 👉 https://youtu.be/PB2MqxVuauY

Great song. Depressing, sure. The cover by Easy Star All-Stars with Toots & the Maytals is great, incredibly uplifting. I recommend checking it out.

Let Down is the perfect song, on the perfect album, by the perfect band. I don't care what your opinion is, it's a fact and if you disagree, you're wrong. End of story.

As a long time Radiohead fan, I was kind of shocked when my 11 year old daughter told me this was her favorite song last year. Kind of came out of nowhere but I’m glad we can share some music in common now.

I've always liked the song but the Easy All Start Dubs version of the song made me appreciate it much more. To me, songs like Let Down are the songs that ColdPlay has spent their career trying to make. And I don't much like Coldplay

I was an '06 born. I started listening to radiohead around 2018/2019 and it was all I listened to back then while everyone else was listening to stuff like Post Malone or Blackpink. Nothing wrong with them, I actually love a lot of those 'Gen Z anthems' myself but whenever the conversation pivots to music, I would always feel a bit left out. Now with Radiohead entering the Gen Z zeitgeist, I get to enjoy these songs I listened to since I was a prepubecent kid with my peers apart of the the Gen Z collective. It's really amazing.

I was born in 1996. I'm from a faraway country, not an English speaker, and I've never heard of Radiohead. The first time I discovered a Radiohead song (besides the ones I probably heard in movies and don't know what those are) was in 2025. It was No Surprises, Fake Plastic Tree, Creep, and Karma Police. They just appeared on my YouTube autoplay. I love those songs, and I started listening to Radiohead. I think Let Down might be my favorite song of all time.

9 year old me was never the same after I bought this album at Sam goody . I also grew up traveling the mix master that makes up the album cover art for ok computer. It’s near and dear to my heart.
“This one’s gonna break our hearts” he was god damn right and I’ll break it over and over again to feel the crescendo that erupts inside me when I listen to let down . The first song that woke me up. When they played it in 2018 in Boston it wasn’t on the set list and they played it for the last song. I think many of us lost it. The arena was half empty and I couldn’t understand it.

Can't imagine its use in the Season 1 finale of The Bear, 3 years earlier and the best use of a Radiohead song in other media this side of the Lucky bonfire scene in Six Feet Under, didn't put it back in the zeitgeist such that, after the show got legs, it wasn't just a matter of time before the wider exposure led it inevitably to a tipping point.

So many of these trivial, trifling pop songs are like pebbles taken to the top of a mountain and fluff off the top immediate, dynamic but utterly inconsequential. Let down was a massive boulder or an incredible downpour, reshaping how we see the entire landscape.

I love all the information you sheared in this video. What I don’t love is the sentiment that this song wasn’t loved nor appreciated until 2025. As a lifelong Radiohead fan (30+ years) Let Down was an instant classic the first time I heard it, and I can say for sure that all real Radiohead fans know this

It bothers me, very much like Creep, when people all of a sudden claim they’re Radiohead fans because they know one song.

Being a Radiohead fan entails struggling to explain to the rest of the world why this seemingly depressive music instills beauty, hope, and positivity into its misunderstood fan base.

    TikTok be damned!

Funnily enough it was the song that got me into Radiohead. Heard it years and years ago and it never left my brain. Never really took to any of their other stuff. Then around 3 or 4 years ago I heard it again and looked it up- listened to ok computer again and absolutely loved it. Not sure why I didn’t take to it 20 years back

I try not to listen to let down. I do not want to get burned out from it. That being said, I listen to it everyday reluctantly, and preventing myself from screaming "I am gonna grow wings". Peak music

"Let Down" is 1 of a 2-way tie with "Karma Police" for my favorite track off that album. So in my head, it's never been a "forgotten" song. This "resurgence" is baffling to me, but I'm glad that at least younger people are listening to it.

The song was a hit back in the day as well. I absolutely loved this album and would hear Let Down on the nightly top 10 lists on the radio. It just didn't reach the same heights as Paranoid Android or Karma Police.
Fun Fact: The album was such a work of art and was so well received that there were rumors of the studio wanting to release a single of EVERY song on the record. It was so good that people believed they might.
Truly one of the best albums ever.

I’ve been a fan of Radiohead since 1994 and let down was my favourite song from ok computer . I’ve seen them live around the world more than 10 times but they never played let down until the recent tour . I was lucky enough to get tickets for the london o2 show with a few close friends and we all finally got to witness the song live.

I know Let Down became really popular lately, bat hasn't it always been a fan favorite ? Back in the early 2000, when I started listening to Radiohead, we were all praising this track.
