One thingbyou can't say is that he's not making original sounding music, and that his music isn't clearly his own voice. That's something you CAN'T say about the majority of music being produced today. Especially AI driven Lo Fi horse farts being sold on Spotify.

Personally not a fan of his music. At all unfortunately.. But I have seen multiple interviews with him where he comes across as a lovely, well meaning, exuberant and creative individual and we need that in any form of art. More power to the guy. I'll probably never be a fan of his stuff but I kind of wish I was.

Initially, I thought he was an odd dude not worth getting into for the fact that I'd seen him talk about playing a guitar with 5 strings. Like that seemed so blasphemous. However, I'm actually here and deciding to get into his music after seeing arch echo post a short of their collab with him and willow smith on 100000 voices because I thought it was hella cool. Come to find he actually does know about theory and is a great musician with a wildly creative mind and perspective on song writing. Kinda made me realize I was an elitist for judging him on his guitar preferences as well as hypocritical because I myself don't play in standard tunings and I also play an extended range guitar. I also know little to nothing about theory so this guy is actually pretty sick. I like the variety, dynamics, and progressiveness of his music.

I think people just don’t like that he’s a gay wizard. And by people I mean me.. like.. dude you’re not an elf…. Or a wizard. For real though I just listened to some of it and some is good. I don’t know how to feel about that.

I don't go to the art museum often. But I feel better knowing its there. I feel the exact same way about Jacob's music. It's not something that I need to listen to every day, but I know that our world is brighter and better off because it exists.

I admit to having fallen hard for both Jacob and his music. That doesn't mean I like all his music. Some of it is just too much in too small a space. However, the music I love I love wholeheartedly. In fact, I could say Jacob's music that I love I literally go to for healing. Jacob's brain is simply different. I think of him as a sound savant. Whatever I think of one piece of his music or another is meaningless in terms of his abilities which are unlike those of anyone else. Fans have called Dimash Qudaibergen an alien. I'm a Dear, unashamed. Fans have called Jacob Collier an alien. I'm a fan and unashamed. In my mind they are Alien 1 and Alien 2 and I consider myself to be incredibly fortunate to be alive in their time.

Adore the guy! Love his a cappella most of all – always transported by the harmonies – literally feel it resonate all over. My family has been following his music since he was young – my children "grew up" listening to him and being inspired by him. Continue to enjoy watching his trajectory from afar. Appreciate your commentary as well.

Ok, so I like the video, but what REALLY resonated with me was the Subway analogy. I used to work at Subway, and you would be SHOCKED at how many people would try to come back after they took their first bite and told me I made their sandwich wrong… After literally watching me make it.

Love your content but you missed the mark. I really do not like JC.
Why I don't like him, I'm going to use a metaphor.
Imagine an extremely talented chef. They know exactly how to use every ingredient and can combine some that you wouldn't even expect.
This chef is being lauded as the next 5-star Michelin master by everyone.
You go to their restaurant and they've made this giant plate of all the different ingredients, arranged in a beautiful, meaningful way. You take a bite and it tastes like utter garbage.
Jacob Collier is obsessed with what he can do, not what he should.

Jacob has a beautiful soul, tremendous talent, prodigious technical ability, and more integrity than most artists. Don't like his music? Cool. But don't call it bad or soulless or "Disneyfied". You just don't like it.

Liking or not liking is a personal choice. But critizising is the critic lack of hability to do the same as Jacob is doing usually mostly from tje fear of being less so reaction is hate. Remember humanity usually kill the ones that create say or do something new that is prooven to be correct. Tesla was killed for discovering free energy not profitable for the rich in power= dead and technology stolen or hidden.

He deserves all the positive accolades he recieves, has and shares the fun you can have with music. What are the underlying motives off the negative critics, oh thats right they never achieved anything so they do not matter.

I bought In my Room and the first 3 Djesse albums, I like some of his songs, most of them I do not enjoy however. I do understand the criticism and think it is valid in some regards, sometimes talent can prevent you from knowing when not to use everything you got and dial it down. Doesn't mean he has to dial it down if he doesn't want to, after all its his music. I do look forward to his music in the future though.

My favorite pattern of online hate I've seen that seems unique to JC is the people who drop into his videos and leave comments like "Hey Jacob, I'm not going to respect you until I see whether you can sing the blues well."

Like my dude that's like the musical equivalent of asking to speak to the manager stop it

Mic The Snare, thanks so much for making this video. This is exactly what I need to counter all the "Jacob Collier is too much" comments I get. Also, you are literally the Jacob Collier with words. You make so much sense, and your logic all clicks into place!

i would like to see all haters put out 1% of the quaility and quantity of jacobs music. they're just sad haters unable to put out more than some comments on social media but no music. Haters, where are your grammys or sold out concert halls all over the world?

My biggest problem with him is that he cannot seem to translate his talent and knowledge into good songs. Many times I find that songs are either basic and boring pop songs hidden behind various harmonies or when he mixes styles it is like he combines the mediocre stereotypes – almost to the parody level – of the given genre. Unfortunately, he mixes so many colours that the result is often a grey blob. I saw an interview with him when he talked about how his mind can never rest I wonder if that is partially the reason behind these harmonies on harmonies, because he wants more and more, as he finds the already finished parts boring. So maybe a good producer would be good for him (I would pay atrocious amounts of money to see him being paired with Rick Rubin). Also, I wonder how much of the issues discussed in many forums stem from the modern approach to music, i.e.: due to technological advancement you no longer need a band. I saw many videos of how liberating this is, but at the same time you losing creative input and control from others who see/hear your ideas as an outsider.

Positives: great instrumentalist, good perfect pitch, very musically academical, Negatives: voice like wet farts, terrible dress sense/style, crap music that overcomplicates an art form unnecessarily resulting in a wall of sound that is random and accidental.

This video wasn’t necessary, you don’t have to defend Jacob. There’s an old saying, “don’t argue with a pig, it just frustrates you and annoys the pig.”

Our there any actual musicians in these comments, our is it just hate in your hearts for people you will never be as good as. Ohh yeah who here has Grammys and was signed by Quincy Jones’s and respected by Bernie Hancock??

  21. @josephdunn3673

    October 7, 2024 at 7:54 am

Exactly, he's a really amazing musician. A virtuoso. He should be a performance artist and give up the song writing. There are plenty of artists that don't write their music and have great careers. He may be really great at writing soundtracks, orchestral, or Jazz music but stop trying to make him a pop artist. I'm sorry but there is nothing appealing about his voice. Any Grammy's for songwriting are completely unearned.
