When Radiohead created “Everything In Its Right Place,” it became the key that unlocked Kid A, both musically and emotionally. In the aftermath of OK Computer, Thom Yorke was crushed by fame and burnout, unable to write, frustrated by false starts and creative paralysis. Yorke’s block became an existential crisis for Radiohead itself. But this song saved the album and set them on a new path. This is the story of “Everything In Its Right Place.”

this is one of the most life changing songs I’ve ever heard before and the way you crystallize the history of it is so dead on thank you for posting this. My son and I play guitar and piano together and this is one of our favorite songs and the videos that have been made about it are just almost as good as a day in the life by The Beatleswhen landmark song in music thank you for describing the history of it.

i've buy the vinyl, and i openly say that The first song is the worse one, the least interesting musically, the ambiant is weaker that everywhere else around the albu. Like, yes no. Now that i said this, i consider kid a personally as the second greatest album of all time after dsotm

A very interesting analysis. Thanks. I think the video is a bit repetitive regarding its basic point and could be trimmed quite a bit; I would have tried to explore more deeply the question of how the other tracks crystallized around "Everything" (to the extent that we can know or speculate — speculating is fine too!). What specific other decisions were actually made, once "Everything" had clicked? I think it's an interesting question, now that you've raised it. In a way, it partly answers itself wordlessly, through the music itself: knowing the first three albums, Kid A's opening track comes at you as quite a decisive turn that unlocks the rest of the album for you. But it's fun to try to put it into words and explore what the bad were thinking at the time.
