How Exactly Did Anne Sullivan Teach Helen Keller To Communicate?

Weird History | January 5, 2026

The relationship between Anne Sullivan and Helen Keller went beyond pupil and teacher. It was based in Sullivan’s ability to open up the world for Keller. Deaf, blind, and mute due to a childhood illness, Helen Keller learned to read, write, and speak through the tireless efforts of her instructor, friend, and companion, Anne Sullivan.

Anne Sullivan’s teaching philosophy was based on making learning active, enjoyable, and on going. Through finger-spelling, gestures, Braille, and vocal training, Sullivan gave Keller the gifts of language, expression, and liberation.

Sullivan and Keller…2 great SHE ROES!!
I never knew Graham- Bell worked with the hearing impaired. He was a hero and a great humanitarian.
    Great story. ❤.

Do not take this as a benign story. Anne Sullivan used Helen as her socialist mouthpiece. Helen didn't meet or speak to anyone without Anne. Her world was closed to things that the manipulative Anne didn't want her to know and she was taught what Anne wanted her know and speak about.

So I get how she taught Helen the word "water", but then we jump to Helen saying, "My classroom was the forest which smelled of resinous pine", and I have trouble believing she actually said any of that.

It's doubtful that Scarlet Fever took the sight and hearing (and senses of smell and taste, in Laura Bridgman's case) of both Laura Bridgman and Helen Keller. Modern scientific and medical research indicate it was most likely bacterial meningitis. Even today, prompt medical care with IV antibiotics, and potentially steroids is crucial for improving the chances of recovery and reducing the risk of severe after-effects, or death.

If anyone is wondering, the bacterial infection that Anne Sullivan had, basically causes a person's eyelids to flip inward, so that the eyelashes are constantly rubbing up against the eyeballs and scratching them and causing a lot of pain. I think it's because it causes the skin around the eyelids to break down and lose its structural integrity. It makes it pretty much impossible to open your eyes and the corneas get damaged, I think, once it gets bad enough. Nowadays, it's treated with antibiotics and is way less common because sanitation conditions are better and people know to wash their hands. A lot of people in Africa still get it, though. I think the surgery she had, was pretty similar to, or even the same as, the procedure they still do today, where they pull the eyelashes back into their normal position and sew the skin in place, so that they stay in their normal position. Once that's done, the person is able to open their eyes and see again, if the damage from the scraping eyelashes wasn't to bad. For the cornea damage, I'm not sure what they would've done for that part in the 1800's, but I think they may do cornea transplants now, for people who need them. Maybe for Anne, the cornea damage that they were probably unable to fix back then, was probably what contributed to her going blind again when she got older. But I'm a doctor or anything, so this is just speculation.

She didn't. Anne Sullivan lied her way through her entire life and used this poor child.
She also advocated to have "Children like her" unalived at birth

I've always just considered Helen Keller to be so inspirational and just incredible but today I saw a video online with an exert of the 2000 move the miracle work and it dawned on me that while Helen was all those things, the true miracle and inspiration was Anne. How did she do it? How did she keep her temper and her patience? Anne must have been just as incredible as Helen. What a duo, two incredibly intelligent, persistent and hero women.

Controversial Option: Anne Sullivan is the hero, Hellen Keller wouldn't be who she was without her. Anne needs more fame than Hellen (although, Keller's works are amazing).

If you want to know how Helen Keller learned to talk…you should watch the youtube video called "How Helen Keller learned to talk". It's an old 1929 film clip that actually features Anne Sullivan and Helen Keller. Anne explains exactly how she taught Helen to speak.

Here’s my question, if you have never seen or heard of the alphabet you would have no concept of it. It wouldn’t exist in her reality so how can you explain what is it so that she can read it. I don’t even really understand how you can form thoughts if you don’t know any language how does that internal dialogue work?
