Happiness Expert Dr. Arthur Brooks | Blocks Podcast w/ Neal Brennan
Happiness expert, Harvard Professor & author Arthur Brooks joins Neal Brennan to discuss why happiness is ~50% genetic, why men and women fundamentally need different things from love (adoration vs. admiration), the dark triad/tetrad in dating apps, why “success addiction” ruins marriages, the psychology of comedy, the power of the “Reverse Bucket List,” why you need to be bored, how SSRIs affect creativity, Mass vs. Doomscrolling, why your personality keeps improving with age, and why suffering isn’t the same thing as pain.

I love that they light heartedly sparred about Catholicism. I’d have liked to hear a more in depth debate but that’s ok I know it’s not the goal here, but I’m far more like Neal.
His relationship ideas sound great though. I’d buy his book(s?).

Neal… why do you keep saying “wife” like you said it before?? Had to clean my ears to make sure

It's always sad to see two clearly intelligent minds still addled by an iron age fable.

This being a comedy podcast is the only way you can get away with saying both sides have dark sociopaths. only someone so disconnected could think that raising taxes and free healthcare are an extreme position.

Another odious gift from Oprah, like Oz and Phil et al. This one spends wayyyy too much time on his skeletal appearance. But ask him who did his neck.

Its not "ridiculous" for a mid twenties person to be anxious and depressed about how insanely high the cost of renting/owning a place and the cost of raising kids.

I have been really struggling mentally lately and just come back down to being sad/unhappy. This helped me realize nobody is gonna come and save me, and that I’ve gotta just start fighting my unhappiness a little harder. Thanks for another good one, Neal. Always appreciated.

Sounds like there's a reciprocal aspect. Men can adore being admired and the source of that admiration. So for them to get what they need, they have to give what their partner needs. That will be self reinforcing and become more genuine.
@veddermn8
July 10, 2026 at 8:38 pm
Putting on an act of adoration sounds like a recipe for resentment though over time.
