Gianmarco Soresi on the devastating impact of divorce

Neal Brennan | September 13, 2026

In this clip from the Blocks podcast, Gianmarco Soresi sits down with Neal Brennan to discuss the long-term emotional fallout of his parents’ divorce. Gianmarco opens up about the “neurotic” two-week custody cycle that prevented him from building a social life, the bizarre dynamic of his mother marrying his father’s former lawyer, and why he views his stepfather as the antagonist of his youth. It’s a candid, funny, and deeply honest look at how divorce constructs a child’s reality.

Sure come home from school to Ma's to wait around until 5pm for Dad, then every other weekend and 1 night a week stay at Ma's, pack a bag constantly like you're living in hotels like a comedian.

My parents did some kookoo crazy pants crap with joint custody as well. For the first 6 years, my brother and I would alternate parents monday and Tuesday , then we were north with mom on Wednesday and then both with Dad on Thursday then alternated weekends….. it was absolutely crazy making!!

I’m deeply hurt and honestly don’t know how to deal with this pain. 💔 The woman I loved so much has left me for another man, and I’m struggling to accept that she’s no longer mine. I feel lost, confused, and heartbroken. A part of me still wishes I could turn back time and have her in my life again.

That explanation about being the prized person in his father’s eyes to having his gaze move over to his sister feels real as hell.

I know my dad loves me, I know this, but I know I’m not that jewel in his eye or the pride in his heart as much as I used to be.

Which is the next chapter in my life. Good stuff.

I've had so many similar experiences as Giamarci. I guess most kids of divorce do.

We saw Dad every other weekend. 4 days a month. We also had the "could go to court" thing. That's a lot of pressure.

Plus, neither house feels like yours, especially once there's a remarriage. My brother and I don't really remember having OUR home like my friends whose parents were married did. Even as adults, they felt like it was always their home. Their refuge.

Step-parents can be great… but stats are that child abuse is much more likely when a step-parent is introduced. When I divorced, I dated, but no one met my kid.

Even unhappily married couples can put their kids first. They're both invested in you. That's gone with divorce and remarriage.

Kids of divorce lose safety in many ways.
