MRE FLAMELESS HEATERS DONT LAST FOREVER, AND THE FOOD REGULARLY DOES OUTLAST ITS HEATER.
Spec'd to last 5 years, they can supposedly last 10 years if your storage is optimized. Personally tested ≈10 heaters the other day, from meals distributed during hurricane Katrina. 0/10 generated enough heat for me to detect with my hand. Even after trying every trick i could find (warm water, boiling water, adding salt).

A month ago, while trying to show my girlfriend how mre flameless heaters work, I learned some good info.
THE HEATERS ARE NOT COMPLETELY INERT WHILE DRY.
From the instand they are manufactured, they are slowly reacting until you speed the reaction up by adding water, or until the reagents are effectively used up. THE FLAMELESS HEATERS ARE GUARANTEED FOR 4-5 YEARS, and the food in MRE's can absolutely stay good for longer than the heater. You might stretch them to 10 with proper storage.
So:
If you have been storing boxes of heaters from meals distributed during Katrina, waiting to find a use for them, you should trash them.
For the folks who bought boxes of heaters or MREs for prepping, probably time for you to go test a few meals and heaters.
