The Resident Evil 2 Remake is one of many. The original game famously went through a long development process with its original version scrapped at 80% completion. It included characters like Grant Bitman, the proto Leon Kennedy, and Elza Walker, the proto Claire Redfield as well as different roles and costumes for characters like Ada Wong, now alluded to in Resident Evil 2 remake easter eggs. It also featured a completely different version of the rpd. This canceled version of Resident Evil 2, called Resident Evil 1.5, was the focus of an intense search that spanned several forums and websites over the course of more than 15 years.

Let’s do a Resident Evil 1.5/Resident Evil 2 Comparison and explore the long, meandering quest to find the prototype games.

I began flipping through a bunch of pld video games mags the past year, and i kept seeing photos for RE2 in these blue-lit police rooms and morgue. I wanted to get back into play RE 1 and 2 again, but i didn't remember those anywhere in the game… Im glad i found this video on the subject. I was feeling nostalgia for a game that never even came out! Strange that.

It's insane to hear Whang talk about Welsh, Dot50Cal, and the old websites.

Dot50Cal is actually still active on the old forums. He used to be on a podcast called "The RPD Dispatch" if anyone is interested.

Welsh was part of "Project Umbrella" back in the day but this (among other things) splintered the website. Some of the guys left and started "The Resident Evil Podcast" and after a while "Project Umbrella" came back with a bit of a rebrand. Both are excellent sources of LITERALLY everything RE.

Welsh still posts on Twitter about extremely obscure RE stuff like texture sources, paintings, translations, etc. He's pretty easy to find if anyone wants to see random RE stuff.

I have the EGM that had the preview for RE2!!!
It was like issue 93? It's the one with TEKKEN 3 on the cover when it came out in the arcades.
I still have the magazine, seeing Elza Walker in it was SAYYY WHAA!?!?
I actually have the ROM of what they call Resident Evil 1.5
Its rad having lots of extra areas and things that weren't in the RE2 that came out!
Just a rad piece to play when I wanna ROCK dd's on classic RE on the PS classic!
Got my flash drive to be able and hack it!
Makes it one of the BEST systems to play!!!
It's the ONLY way I can handle the PS controllers!
I had the 1st Dual Analog controller for PS when it 1st came out! It had plastic sticks with bo rubber groups and wasn't DUAL SHOCK.
NintenDID have a copyright lock on it cause of that CRUMBY ARSE rumble pack! Once that was up..
    They released the new PS.
I still had the one that used STRAIGHT composite cables into the back. Just a Y/W/R port the cords went straight into.
The dualshock model is when they changed it to the PS exclusive cable. Was the same I/O cabe thing that PS2 also used.

When you mentioned the "they decided to fix it" shit, I let out a huge sigh of disappointment. This is sadly more common than you'd think regarding prototypes, and – to anyone actually knowledgable on archival/preservation etc. – is just completely the wrong way to document something like this. You're muddying the waters, because the vision of the "fixers" will inevitably colour the content whether they like it or not. Also, every second the original game is not disseminated to the public, is another second something could happen causing it to become lost again. If a proto is "disappointing" well, you'd honestly do better just getting a refund if you're not going to release the original, unmodified (imo untarnished) file, because in a modified state it's almost worthless; the work of study and archival will be at least doubled due to requiring an extra "was this element tainted by the vision of the 'fixers'?" step. I must say also, that public statement at 15:34 is mwah chef's kiss. See, now it's their work, and it's being sold behind their back! They've managed to construct a situation where the potential leaker – even if doing it for the wrong reasons – is no longer painted as the hero, but the villain, in this scenario. Nicely done; these groups often tend to have great PR people 🙂 Funny how the same people who complain about hoarders, and how badly they want to see the game, immediately become what they hate once they themselves come into possession of the prototype.
TCRF infamously tried to do similar things with the Pokemon Gen 1 prototypes before someone thankfully wound up going behind their back and releasing it to 4chan. They hadn't even paid for them either, they were just given them by the hacker. It was always "tomorrow, tomorrow" and "we'll just do a translation, that's all, it won't take long" but, for fuck's sake, is it so hard to just release the thing and then do the translation work? Again, to anyone knowledgable on preservation/archival, this is a no brainer.
But no, the issue with so many in this community is that they care more about clout than about preserving and respecting the history of these games. They want to keep people hanging on as long as possible so they can advertise their website, or get likes on their twitter account when they post images taken from prototypes whilst they're "working on" them, or (worst of all) donations to their Patreon accounts. If people want to donate to show support for the work you do, that's fantastic, but the way I see it is that you're holding a rare piece of gaming history hostage. They (TCRF) spoke about the event like it was going to be, well, an event "we have to do it right to maximize eyes on it" and all of this bullshit. Why do you need to do that? It will naturally attract the people who are interested. This is gaming history archival, not a celebrity boxing match. "B-but we want to get as many people interested at once so it can have more eyes and hands working on preserving it!" they say, bullshitting; it's because they want to maximize the attention they get and the tingles their dopamine receptors give as a result.
Hidden Palace? Well, they fuckin' rock. Just release the roms as they get them, and – from an outsider lense at least – seem to do it the right reasons: for the love of the games; not as a means of farming attention.

actually resident evil 2 does have the "blowing zombies in half" feature you just need to use the shotgun for that to happen
and yes you can also see more zombes on the screen too.

I adore how the devs behind the remake got the build and said "dam this shit sucks, instead of archiving it for historical sake, let's mod the shit out of it"

Its pretty cool that capcom was so dedicated to delivering a quality game. Despite being 80% complete, they restarted development. Just so that when you bought the next Resident Evil, you got your moneys worth.

Its almost as cool as when REmake3 was $60.

Damn, how much I hate people like this "Curator" that hoard rare games, books etc. and refuse to just copy the files or scan the pages and share them with the rest of the world.

Private collectors who won't share the roms are weak AF. It makes sense for RE1.5 given the legal troubles that people could get into but if they hoard it afterwards then they're lame.
