great video! i think gear acquisition syndrome is also the result of seeing buying gear as a more straightforward way to potentially achieve your dream of being a musician. it's tempting to see it that way because acquiring gear is simpler and faster than, say, honing your skills. it requires less thought, because the only thing you need to adjust is monetary, rather than dealing with time and discipline.

also, sometimes people attribute mythical qualities to certain brands and instruments (moog is one) and are willing to pay hilariously inflated prices for a piece of gear with that "mojo" or history. however, just because you use the same gear as your heroes doesn't mean you'll automatically make good music. and as you said, people sometimes buy gear just to show off.

I don't think you answered the ground loop question correctly. The question was asked of how to remove ground loop noise when something is connected via both USB and 1/4". You answered based on POWER ground loops. The problem isn't coming from power, it's coming from the fact that the instrument is connected to the DAW PC twice: one via the audio interface, and once via USB (for MIDI). There is going to be a ground differential between the two, and on (unbalanced) 1/4" audio, that ground is part of the signal – so any digital noise produced by the PC that affects the ground (which it will) ends up appearing in your audio.

There are a number of ways of fixing this:

    – Switch from USB MIDI to DIN MIDI. The MIDI standard includes the use of optocouplers for 5-pin MIDI, which decouples the ground and signal from each device, thereby breaking the ground loop.
    – Use a DI box on the analog audio output. This breaks the ground loop by running it through a transformer, although the DI box will color the audio somewhat, and the transformer inside it is susceptible to EMF noise from power supplies, etc.
    – Use a USB ground loop isolator. They're not cheap, but they work perfectly and do not affect the audio. I've got quite a few of them in my studio. I have always used the iFi iDefender isolators, but for some reason they are unavailable at the moment. An alternative from a different manufacturer is this one: https://amzn.to/3BJ09RF

Hope that helps. Incidentally, I actually produced a video on this specific subject, it's on my channel.

To expand on the smoking question, cigarettes don't just damage light-colored plastics like white surfaces or piano/keyboard keys. It leaves behind a toxic funky smell that is near impossible to get rid of. It's an obnoxious invisible aura that permanently attaches itself to objects and clothing and non-smokers can pick up on it very easily. Useful should anyone ever try to pass anything off as sold in a "smoke-free" home. Give it a sniff.

Always love your insights on the world. You made a good point about economic class affecting buying behavior. On the flip side of the example you gave about yourself, I grew up broke and never had a lot in the way of material items I wanted. I find myself constantly using this as an excuse to justify buying frivolous shit, telling myself I’m making up as an adult for what I wasn’t able to have growing up. Not the healthiest mindset I’m sure. That topic just got me thinking.

I know this is 2 years old now but still the studio looks great and you should be proud of yourself.

I was educated as a TV repair man back in the day when TVs where actually repaired and heavy smoking can indeed damage electronics. It mixes with the dust inside and forms a sort of nasty sticky layer on the circuits. I'm not sure how much you would have to smoke for this to be a problem. I imagine it's a lot.

Every time I see a video of yours I'm outraged at your number of subs and views. Sooooo much more personality and hardwork than alot of music youtubers "drummer reacts to meshuggah" channels. On the other hand its probably way more people who actually care about you and your opinion watching this. Amazing edit, music, lessons and monologues discussions that matter.

I'm a little late and maybe this has been covered. I find determining how long a project may take, time management, setting realistic goals for the day, and knowing when to call it a day are the hardest parts of DIY. Also managing the impulse to work on something more creatively fulfilling and staying positive with a project that may take many weeks, months, maybe years to finally enjoy the final product.

On Chairs: I found a guy on Craigslist local to me that takes old conversion van chairs and modifies them and puts them on Herman Miller steel rolling chair bases. For $100 I got a reclining, height adjustable, and springy captain's chair fit for thousands of miles of roadtrips and it's velvety bright red with an ashtray in the arms that flip up, which is great for us guitar players to move them out the way when playing. I don't smoke, but neither did the previous owner, so I can store plectrums in there.

Smoke stinks. And the synth will stink for months. Also nicotine will stain and get sticky so it might stick keys and stuff and I'm sure it damages stuff like foam and cloth that might be used to dampen the keys. And smoke makes plastics (especially white) yellow, and that's a pain to fix if you don't want a nasty looking hobo synth.

    Just don't smoke…

As a former contractor I can say, you can do it all yourself. I would even recommend doing 85-90% yourself. Don't touch anything structural, and have a fairly thorough understanding of your building envelope if you're opening up any exterior walls. Eg. A hole in your vapor barrier the size of a dime will suck like 100x more moisture than a 2 foot hole.

Source: I've fixed A LOT of mold and moisture issues.

gotta get a herman miller aeron chair! you'll never have to replace it. I found out about it doing av installs. the professional LD's and FOH would have those chairs shipped around on tours for years. they're also really easy to service in case anything ever goes wrong

I’m totally stealing your cable storage idea even though it’s literally just common sense storing your cables in bins.. also I’m late but congrats on getting the great studio! Kinda new here but I’ll be around more
