9:00 i noticed Dan say (and i love dan btw) but i noticed him say "she let him drink himself to death" it seemed like she was a great person who just let people do what they wanted as long as it was not hurting anyone else.. kind of like my body my choice… just sayin. I would not want my wife to tell me how many drinks I am "allowed" to have. much love Neil . aloha

I truly think behind all of Dan's worries and especially with the loss of his sister (im genuinely sorry, Dan) is a great human being. He's your buddy that you're always happy to see, you always get a good story and he just seems like he cares about stuff that's important. I would love to be friends with someone like Dan in a heartbeat.

Dan probably is never gonna read this comment, but I've never related to someone's childhood trauma so much. Always thought he is funny. Thanks for sharing your story man, hope you eventually fall deeply in like with yourself…I'm still on the journey.

It's crazy he has anxiety. I specifically chose to watch this video to help me with holding a conversation while riddled with anxiety. Every time I see Dan he never misses a blink or stumbles or stutters on anything from interview formats to dicking around with Stavy.

you don't hear many stories where a guy drinks heavily and does drugs every day for 10+ years and it all turns out fine. Seems like a nice fellow, rough start to life.

This is both tragic and inspiring. Dan Soder first had his dad abandon his family, got some solace and support from his half sister from the OTHER family Gary abandoned, then his dad dies of alcoholism when Dan is 14, his supporting sister dies when he is 16 in a car accident when she was only 28, the worst stepdad figure he ever had was his dead dad's BEST FRIEND, Dan gets into smoking cigs, weed, drinking, etc. Somehow graduates high school and college against all odds, huge props for that, tries stand up comedy, it's touch and go for a long time, he struggles with substance abuse especially alcoholism like his late father, he gets some success in comedy but sees many of his peers shoot up past him, isn't happy with where he's at, and then he quits drinking late 20s, works harder on comedy, slowly builds up a career, mid to late 30s starts really turning it around, gets an HBO special, dates and eventually marries Katie Nolan of all people, starts getting serious comedy attention and props, and is currently at the top of his game in the stand up comedy world.

This kid was most likely to be dead or in prison at age 41 given all he has been through. Instead, he really might be the next Louis C.K. I am more excited for the future of Dan Soder's comedy career than damn near anybody, he's just getting started.

I love listening the way he speaks of Katie – esp listening to this in February 2025 and they are still absolutely amazing as a couple and going so so strong. ❤

38:02 man I relate to this. Like I won’t put full effort because if I fail I didn’t try but if I did put full effort I have no reasons for my failures so don’t try. Took a long time to grasp this myself

So wierd dan talking about getting anxious during prepared bits…I always felt Dan is THE BEST riffer in comedy, why I loved the bonfire, if Dan gets comfy on stage look out…like top ten GOAT status

This is such a great show. I’m old. When I first started watching, I didn’t know Neil had worked on and written all that classic stuff. He’s like the David Mamet of comedy. He probably wrote Wolf Hall, too. I love Soder, and I really just found out about both of you guys two years ago when I had a prostate infection coming back from Ireland. Holy mackerel. But I got into comedy, and mostly, I liked your podcasts because the great comedians are just good at ripping & riffing. Jordan Peterson wants to talk to all of them, and Katt Williams stopped time for me when I watched him on that goofball’s show for three hours, over and over again.

But I really like Soder, and I just knew him as a cool guy on Billions. Dan has that classic voice that sounds like he could be on the radio in any era since radio began, sponsored by suspenders or Tommy gun mail-order. Mark Norman is another one with a great voice. Adam Carolla, also.

At first, probably like Shane, I thought that Soder always talking about his not-girlfriend, but fiancée (like Gomer Pyle would say it—ha ha), was gay. Then he had her on a show, and I get it. She is razor sharp and funny. Honest to God, she’s like the best-looking girl at cheerleader camp, who also smokes cigarettes—a compliment implying a carefree edginess, but definitely not slatternly. Not like Dana Carvey’s redneck character with a ‘come and git some’ vibe.
