Compost-Fueled Cars: Wouldn’t That Be Great? – Onion Talks – Ep. 1

The Onion | March 19, 2026

Young media professional Cameron Hughes delivers a compelling argument for his vision of the future–one filled with cars powered by compost. He outlines the idea he came up with in detail, leaving the formalities for other visionaries in other fields. One thing is for certain: he already came up with the idea.

If this guy didn't reek so much of having a Tulane B.S. in business, I'd say the idea is almost feasible:
Capture methane from decaying vegetable matter — 'compost' — and use that to run the car.

ik this is a comedy skit but this guy's premise is broken. compost is not a problem that needs to be taken care of. compost is a good thing and many places can benefit from having more of it. trash on the other hand is universally bad. the picture at the start seems to depict a landfill of trash. so that's probably what it's supposed to be about.

the joke would work better if he were talm cars that use trash as fuel, thus truly "killing one bird with two stones" but he isn't. he says compost.

i don't think the joke is trying to be about him saying the wrong thing or mistakenly trying to fix the wrong thing cuz they sounded conceptually similar. the joke is that any idiot can stand on stage and just pitch cool things they're imagining. actually nvm it does not need explaining. you get what it's supposed to be.

tldr; joke uses the wrong word so audience needs to imagine he's talking about trash instead.

I know someone just like this. He wants to be the "visionary" on projects. Money will flow in he says as he tries to lead people on to help him make it happen. He's spent the last 24 years telling me he'll be a millionaire someday too

    I'm all for ideas,

I'm even more for the idea of taxing the 1% rich to pay heaps of workers for those ideas to come to fruition and become public owned.

Cars but flying …flying cars but that run on garbage … garbage easily cheaply and efficiently turned into flying car fuel fuel … that you can eat… that is healthier than a kale asparagus mulberry seaweed spirulina goji Berry, açaí, lupine bean and chia seed wrap…. We have the visionary, me. We just need to find engineers that will implement my groundbreaking ideas.

Elon Musk does this with his outlandish ideas. Legend has it hes preparing for a talk on his faster than light travel spaceship.

He knows saying crazy stuff means no money has to be spent on marketing as everyone loves drama

This is literally Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos (along with many other stories). She had a "wouldn't it be great if…" idea and just assumed it could be done. Her idea was physically impossible, but she just assumed someone would figure it out for her and she could fake it until then.

People don't seem to realize running an engine on the gasses released by compost as it digests is very possible. It is only inefficient and relatively expensive fuel.
