I had to watch this as my dad, Bill, went to Vietnam and the family had a back-yard cook out when he arrived back home. In his case, a car backfired somewhere nearby and he found himself looking up to see everyone's feet, him having "hit the deck" so to speak. I always felt bad at the thought of him doing this, probably feeling embarrassed, but also living with a trauma no one close to him understood.
At least this skit adds some levity to the concept of a Vietnam homecoming cookout!
(For anyone curious or interested: My dad was Dr. William E. Dieker, who served in the 5th of the 7th as a medic in Chu Lai from 68-69. He went on to become an esteemed physician, wildlife conservationist, raised three children, and was married to my mom for almost 60 years before succumbing to dementia three years ago this month.)
