Ali Siddiq | Telling His Own Story | Mike Birbiglia’s Working It Out

Mike Birbiglia | March 8, 2026

Ali Siddiq is one of the most prolific storytellers in comedy. Although they work in a similar format, Ali and Mike’s paths have never crossed until now. Now they sit down to discuss the nuances of comedic storytelling, including how to make specific topics relatable to audiences, and Ali explains how he made his own path in comedy after serving six years in prison on drug charges. Plus, Ali and Mike, both parents of swimmers, share war stories from swim meets.

The competition “over there” compared to “over here” in comedy is so real. I experienced shady attitudes and no engagement when I auditioned for Def Comedy Jam in 06. Then a year later l experienced inclusion and kindness on the set of NBC’s Last Comic Standing.

Don't say Richard Pryor was probably high when he said that particular story on stage about the monkey unless you know for sure. He is not here to defend himself. Ricard Pryor was the greatest of comedians. Everyone's style is different. There were times when he told story's that had meaning. Like when he went to Africa and told the story about "Not Seeing Nigga's" I am really surprised you would say something like that. But I guess you have a right to your own opinion.

Cool. The week after you have a pleasant chat with a principled guy who calls out assholes during his specials, you have a guy who performed for a prince who had a journalist chopped into pieces for calling him out on his human rights abuses. Nice to know your channel is one of those places. I despise people like you.

His most interesting thing is how he related and tries to relates to each others life. I am a little worried about how much our host is not fucking with him as he would with others… he's a little scared 😱 to fuck with this guest who has had a "real" life before. I like that they are relating. But… he is not comfortable Mike that is. He is trying though, i appreciate that they are both trying to relate and come from the same life experience. Both great comics in their own right. I love ❤️ it and hope your ears do too!

I enjoy Ali so much. Him and Mo make me miss Houston.
Also happy to watch this podcast. Have listened to Ali in other places, and he is always funny; but this is Ali talking about comedy with another person who loves comedy, and it was an interesting conversation.
