The Case For a Boring Afterlife (The Good Place)
The Good Place imagined paradise as a perfect utopia where you could wish for anything you need or want. But is that really the best afterlife? (This video contains spoilers for the entirety of The Good Place, including the series finale.)

If I had to choose a world within the show's limits, it would be the good place but then I'd go through the green door to manifest the life that you described the medium place as🤓think smarter not harder (actually tho good video lol)

Personally as a Christian The Good place to me really made me feel like truly Heaven is only Heaven because of Jesus. The idea of an existence in which I can visibly see and physically feel my savior is definitely Heaven.

"A medium world where it's not mind-numbingly peaceful, but also not so bad that the problems become world-shattering."
…so a sitcom. Heaven is a sitcom where you're the main character. That sounds incredibly accurate.

It would be interesting to compare this to Tolkien's take on life and death. Because he gave the humans the shortest lives, they got the most done. He gave the elves near immortality, and they stagnated and avoided the outside world.

For some reason this same question has occurred to me again and again of what would be my ideal good place, and frankly I think it would just be being sent back here again for new game plus, round 2, because I dont think I could stand eternity and eventually the me I am needs to end and a new me needs to begin.

literally the whole point of the Good place test at the end of the show is to allow for self actualisation, you grow there in emotional intelligence and maturity until you become a more fulfilled and complete person. Instead of making the good place right for you, they make you right for the good place. By the time you reach the good place you wouldn't become one of the zombies, you would choose to continue to learn and grow and pursue your future, because the show has a very positive view on humanity and who we are in the right conditions.

I find it odd that people engage with this afterlife/religion series literally and seriously now. I was under the assumption that this was always the joke, that an afterlife would be a literal place you can stand around in and drink booze in, instead of some sort of conceptual 5th dimensional unimaginable place.
I'm athiest, so I've rejected that concept too, but I've never thought any religion thinks of its afterlife as a literal place.

Your video essay is exactly what I try to train my students into – I disagree with you, but how 'bout making an argument and trying to convince me to a new perspective anyway? Ultimately, I think it would take an endless number of bearamies for me to get bored of a place with endless books, knowledge and people, especially if I can ask Janet to give me a 5-10% consequence incentive from time to time. Goals you set for yourself are still meaningful, and the search for self-improvement might be considered a necessary moral lesson to instil during the tests; thus by the show's internal rules I think would need to be addressed before residents even arrived.
I think the worst part of the whole afterlife system is that you can't help people who are suffering on earth from your new perspective – I don't care that that starving child will one day have an eternal happiness, I want their suffering to end now so that I can enjoy my own. That is ultimately the biggest problem with this version of the afterlife – it still lowers your moral responsibility on earth since you'll get endless do-overs once your moral actions have effectively lost the power to help.

I disagree with the Good Place being boring as the show describes it. Humans come out with new inventions, new discoveries, new theories etc all the time. There will always be a new show, new idea, new whatever for you to play with or you could just literally watch human life. Like the discovery channel. lol. Also its a choice not to continue your work. Like if you were a writer then why would you stop writing books? You can ask for resources rather than answers. And there will be new people going to the good place to get to know. Well new people in version 2 of it that is. Which I do agree the reincarnation to learn your mistakes until you get into the good place is a good deal. And why not have clubs, sports, etc? Sure you can change yourself to be the best but cmon. Wheres the fun in that? I feel like the good place residents are blah cuz they brought it on themselves.
My point is even if you get your every wish granted, there will always be stuff to do. I think Hollywood thinks that way is cuz they did get everything they ever could want. But they never focused on a skill, purpose, career to enjoy life. Or worse they lost that love for the skill. Selling out gets your money but leaves emptiness which is why I think every story about eternal life ends with "dont do it man. you wont like it. Trust"
Also I feel like unemployed life is medium place life lol. Its not bad. Its basically being eternally human. But I could not be eternally alone.
Wait you 40? Bro. I would of guessed early 30s at most. Late twenties at least.
@kyleromero9912
May 22, 2026 at 8:41 pm
So the flaw that you're arguing with the good place is that the lack of challenge(getting everything you want) ultimately eliminates any purpose.
Yet isn't the point of the Good place to be able to choose?
What is inherently wrong with someone getting all the instant gratification, being okay with that, and then just walking through that door. Or even just existing contently afterward.
Hell, you could even argue that after all the instant gratification you would get bored of it all and attempt to challenge yourself.
The beauty of the reformed Good place is that everyone gets to choose, sure you could just have orgasms for the rest of eternity but you could also wish to become someone you would be proud of.

10:38 Sounds like a ground hog day situation.
18:17 Honestly sounds like more normal life minus the hassle of resource acquisition and the need to trade for it.
Like honestly that kinda place with the means to create and something like an infinite catalogue of things, like say a netflix of every film and show, then other activities to do, but unlike the good place, it doesn't come to you, you have access to it in your house or domain, but everything there you have to sorta build yourself if you want it.
Like those plants or the furniture ect, the world gives you a mediocre baseline, but then leaves the tools for you to improve it over time.
22:18 Nah, you'd need to be tailored. But having a door that opens for a chunk of time where a community area exists for a time each day where you can choose to go, would be good. It fufills both needs without compromising either.

The point in having an opportunity to vanish yourself in the afterlife 'heaven' is the same point in why some countries have allowed eldery to choose and pass away after certain age. In this meaning, existence it self is in constant cycle. Between suffering and not-suffering, we drive our lives and try enjoy some stuff while struggling to other. But at time goes by in heaven, you will understand that existing is also in cycle with non-existence. Also the not-living state (even if there is an afterlife) is also not having the experience either of suffering and not-suffering feelings. The whole point of The Good Place Show is to dialogue about how humans, their ethics, their morality and their free will deals with an afterlife in infinite time-space as "hell" or "heaven" would have, and sure, making fun of it. Even hell wouldn't be so bad if you don't know what you are missing. When you don't have free will or when you couldn't know were your past decisions would lead you at end, that changes nothing AFTER the end of your life. I wouldn't blame myself to go to hell if I couldn't EVER know what is the bad place's policy to not go into it. When there is a bet without explicit rules before the result, you don't bet, or you may bet thinking "whatever it's just luck than"… So, in my opinion, either good and bad places doesn't make sense, you should do good because that is what is less bad in a general sense and just that. So if there is the balance place, or a reincarnation line I would choose to go there.

@TheGentlemanHeadcrab
May 22, 2026 at 8:41 pm
14:45 You kind of do, every action you take becomes meaningless if there's no end to it. So having an end helps you enjoy the journey. And if you genuinely think the good place has no merit if you're gonna die again, then clearly you must think your own life and everyone else's has no value either, that our world is worthless because none of us will survive either so why bother trying?
@TheGentlemanHeadcrab
May 22, 2026 at 8:41 pm
14:07 bruh. They're literally immortal and get to do everything they ever wanted no matter how insignificant, spend eternity creating art, master every skill you ever wanted to learn, eat any food you ever wanted to eat, sleep in the mud or something else weird.
And then once your human mind can't take eternity anymore, when you grow tired of existing and you've had your fill, you can just simply move on and get put back into the earth basically restarting your cycle.
Also you have another option they don't really bring up except in the bad place, memory wiping. Just clear your mind once every few hundred years and enjoy everything all over again, you can even leave specific memories behind if you wanna keep them.
@TheGentlemanHeadcrab
May 22, 2026 at 8:41 pm
10:35 you misunderstand.
The bad place still exists, the original bad place. But it only exists for the truly bad people now, the people who took a life for fun, the people who assaulted women or minors, the people who did unforgivable things. The bad place where you get rehabilitated is for the people who never really did anything too severe outside of being a public nuisance, harassing others, ruining reputations, or generally being obnoxious. Once those people worked on themselves and got better, they were allowed in.
@TheGentlemanHeadcrab
May 22, 2026 at 8:41 pm
5:40 nitpick time! It's not heaven, this is pretty expressly stated many times, there's also no hell either. Those are human notions, it's just a good and bad place.
There's also the fact that the beings working in the bad place aren't demons, they actually consider being called a demon to be kind of a racist slur, which is why they always call each other that.
@TheGentlemanHeadcrab

Spoilers ahead for the end of the series
The Bad Place leads into the Good Place
The Medium Place leads into the Bad Place

Wish I remembered the name of the interview, but there was a professor who was interviewed about this study done that proves boredom is really good for your brain. After listening to the interview, I started using commute to/from work time as my designated time to be bored. No radio. No phone calls. No podcasts. Just me and my thoughts…. I have to say, it really changed my life. It sounds so minor, but just taking an hour a day to be completely away from stimuli completely rewired my brain. I’ve made some big life changes since I started doing this 😊 and I feel so much more at peace with the place I am in.

I gotta disagree with this take – your final point is the need for self-actualization, which I don't disagree with! But as I understood it, that's the point of the test that they eventually design in the show. The idea, as I took it, was that when someone is finally able to pass that test, they are the best version of themselves. They have reached that point, so the good place is then about enjoying themselves now that they have achieved that best version of themselves.
There there are no challenges left when people arrive at the good place, because with the test now implemented, they will have faced and overcome all the challenges necessary for self-actualization.
