155 Irish soldiers versus thousands of Katangese and their mercenaries. Sounds like a losing battle, right? You’re correct – but what if the Irish had some whiskey…?

“The siege of Jadotville was an engagement during the Congo Crisis in September 1961. “A” Company, 35th Battalion (UN service) of the Irish Army ONUC contingent was attacked by Katangese Gendarmerie troops loyal to the Katangese Prime Minister Moïse Tshombe. The lightly armed Irish soldiers, besieged in Jadotville (modern Likasi), resisted Katangese assaults for five days as a relief force of Irish, Indian and Swedish troops unsuccessfully attempted to reach the Irish force.
The outnumbered Irish company was eventually forced to surrender after ammunition and supplies were exhausted, but not before inflicting heavy casualties on the Katangese and their mercenaries. They were held as prisoners of war for approximately one month, with no loss of life.”

Trying to understand EXACTLY WHY the UN sent the Irish peacekeepers and although you helped me understand it a little better I’m still not fully understanding why. I’m watching the Netflix movie about it and really like to understand what lead up to this conflict but it’s kinda confusing

My grandfather was in the Irish army during WW2.

As was my uncle when he was younger years ago.

The government seriously need to put more money into defence forces nowadays.

Watched this on a train, then looked to my left and there's an old man with a jacket saying "Irish U. N. Veterns Assoc."

Telling stories about deployment in Beruit.

    Cool coincidence.

Their bravery is recognized worldwide. Even though Ireland hasn't been involved in many conflicts, everyone knows don't fuck with the Irish. If you do, it'll cause troubles 🤨

I watch that movie once in a while. Those guys are true badasses. They held out against superior forces and without any support. One can only hope to be that brave.

When you look up this conflict on Wikipedia, it says that, on the Katanga side, 3-300 were killed and 8-1,000 were wounded. That's a pretty big spread. Also the numbers 3 and 8 are oddly specific.

My cousin was in the Irish army years ago. He was giving a tour to a bunch of americans and one particularly loud mouthed one asked him where all the fighter jets are. He simply told him they were being used in a training exercise and the guy accepted his answer.

People tend to ignore the fact that the irish used to be viking's favorite prey. Yeah the effing vikings loved to raid ireland kidnaping irish and turning em into slaves to sell em later.

Until they build courage enough to fight back, from that point you can imagine what's in the irish dna (besides whiskey integrated receptors)

as someone from a small island (many times smaller than ireland) i would think ppl would be eager to boast about any accomplishments like that. i know we would never ever let that go!!
