Charles Bukowski On The Tragedies Of Ordinary Life – “The Shoelace Poem”

Pursuit of Wonder | December 23, 2025

In this Bukowski poem entitled, “The Shoelace Poem,” Bukowski invites the listener/reader to feel less alone in the insanity created by the simple, mundane string of ordinary life events. Sometimes it isn’t massive life tragedies that push someone over the edge. Sometimes it’s just one too many broken shoelaces. And we should give everyone the benefit of the doubt, assuming we have likely all broken that last shoelace.

This video is transformative in nature and is intended for educational purposes. Therefore, it falls under fair use.

The audience is laughing because [Calif's] governor is often crazy — likely Reagan, the king of idiots who (1) made carrying loaded rifled illegal because the Black Panthers scared him, and (2) he closed most mental asylums in Calif.

00:48 I like the symbolism. The shoelace snaps and clogs the passage of time, the sand in an hourglass of a man’s life from passing. too bad, so sad for the man who wishes to repeat in the footsteps of the tried and true methods to which one aims to complete life. And we feel sort of cheated because of this futility. You guessed it!: FTGE and suicide.

I once loudly farted in the middle of the important corporate merger presentation & physically crumpled to the floor, mentally broke-down, the farting continuing each time a sob wracked my body and each time I gasped and choked
    for air.

The odour of eggs and tuna pervaded the room entire.

“Sometimes you climb out of bed in the morning and you think, I'm not going to make it, but you laugh inside — remembering all the times you've felt that way.”
