Hey! Thank you for watching this Introduction to Ambient Music. This is a really unique genre and I hope you learned a thing or two. Some of the big ambient musicians are Brian Eno, Aphex Twin, Tangerine Dream, The Orb, Steve Roach, Biosphere, and many more. Be sure to check out albums like Ambient 1: Music For Airports, Selected Ambient Works 85-92, Substrata, and many more.

Thanks for this very interesting discussion. I like your definition of ambient music: "It's instrumental music emphasized on creating a mood, a feeling, a certain atmosphere."
As a recent retiree and music hobbyist, I aspire to create instrumental music that I now would call "ambient". In the past, when working or studying, I liked to put on certain classical music pieces that enhanced my focus. They tended to be quiet and slow, yet musically interesting, meeting Brian Eno's criteria you mentioned – that of being "… able to accommodate many levels of listening… ignorable as it is interesting."
My music performance skills are minimal, and I'm not interested in learning to program orchestral music performances accurately on the computer. Lucky for me, recent years have brought us an abundance of beautiful, interesting, and complex software for generating music on the computer. I own recording software, including many virtual instruments that combine pure synthesis with sampled acoustic instruments.
I haven't produced anything yet, but I feel like I have focus now. Again thanks for this discussion.
    Peter.

Curious that Eno did not mention that he was involved with the precursor to this in a couple of his projects with Robert Fripp starting in 1972 – "No Pussyfooting", and then 2 years later "Evening Star", both of which fit into this category of being both ignorable and interesting. In addition to Eno's keyboards and synths, it included Fripp playing through a modified Revox tape recorder, a device that was labeled Frippertronics. Since then, Fripp has used a similar approach with more modern electronics for a wide variety of soundscapes, very different from his playing in King Crimson.

Thanks for the video. I don't think Michael Stearns gets enough credit for pioneering the genre. Listen to the album "Morning Jewel" (1980). Then listen to his "Desert Moon Walk" (1977) and tell me it's not Dark Ambient. 🙂

i personally really adore ambient black metal. it takes the droning guitar and bass and screeching vocals of black metal and pairs them with ambient nature sounds but it also can really stand out with the instrumentals having a much more cheery vibe despite still very obviously being black metal. it's often referred to as atmospheric black metal too, and even though it's obviously not just ambient music, it gives off similar vibes (to me anyway, not sure if it would for people who aren't already into black metal).

Hiroshi Yoshimura is my favorite ambient artist with feeling. I used to love Brian Eno’s music, but now I find it to be a little detached, especially the pieces that are composed by computers. Steve Roach’s Quiet Music box set is warm and pleasant to the ears. Saul Stokes is mostly not really ambient, but he does create some lush walls of sound in many musical pieces.

I started listening to ambient music on Soma FM back in the days while programming. Somehow that stuck to me and I started to set up my own ambient patches. Sometimes I fell asleep in front of my synths – ambient is exactly what I need to relax. (While driving I prefer punkrock 😉 )

Hey man! I love your music and I am also a music producer of ambient music! It would be great if you could help my channel grow by subbing! Brian eno is a genius and could be possibly a legend

i really love this introduction to ambient music – it's definitely a deep love of mine and it's so fascinating to see all the subgenres there actually are! i personally really love ambient music that is a bit more classical/electronica/experimental. i'm a big fan of olafur arnalds – definitely recommend checking him out! also love sophie hutchings, whose more post-classical but still feels ambient to me (:

Gymnopédie No. 1 oddly sounds so familiar. The sound is almost like C418 Sweden. It has such a nostalgic and emotional touch. I can't even recognize if I've heard Gymnopédie No. 1 before, but it's like I know every note.
