Kim and Jimmy were messing with Howard's life, they wanted to destroy his life. They killed Howard personally and professionally, they never thought he'd actually be killed.

Man, you spend the whole series hating Howard, and he’s the best person on the show. He hires from within by promoting mailroom. Fights to get Jimmi work. Acts as the bad guy to protect Charles

I just realized that the creators of BCS amd BB repeated the same pattern to perfection. Howard is for BCS what Hank was for BB. For most of the series you hate them. They come off as jerks, more or less antagonists. But by the time they die, their characters have become sympathetic and the viewer begins to see their goodness. Both deaths are shocking and tragic. Both leave you with mouth agape and head shaking.

    Pattern followed to perfection.

I'm so glad that this scene wasn't spoiled for me and that I went into this episode completely blind. This was easily the most shocking moment of the series
