I was sober for 3 years and I was the angriest and most out of control I had ever been in my life. Sobriety is like anything else. It's not for everybody.
Hey, sick person here, checking in.. fourth day of the beer binge, things could be better but they could be a hell of alot worse.. no real complaints, checking in..
lol you are not "always an alcoholic", thats fucking stupid, an easy way for people to stigmatize someones alcohol use and/or attempt to gain sympathy for their mistakes…but in REALITY, you can have a period of time in your life where alcohol can be a dependence, for whatever reason, but if you recognize that and treat the underlying issues, alcohol can be perfectly safe and moderated…because its no longer a dependence, morons
This is so real and raw about alcoholics. I know he made mistakes but I have a lot of respect. There is no telling them no. There is no showing consequences to scare them off. It takes over your fucking life and if you are not an alcoholic, you just can’t explain it. If you could, they wouldn’t be an alcoholic
I feel weird sometimes cause I get these alcohol vids in my feed a lot lately
Never smoked or drank my entire life, straight edge without knowing it..only vices were video games, fast food and energy drinks
Started drinking and smoking in 2020, early 30s, cause nothing was going on so figured why not…binged smoking, drinking and even started doing nicotine pouches daily. Partially for fun, also to dirty bulk cause its easier to eat with munchies and I wanted to see if Id get withdrawals or anything. Kept working out and kept my sleep on point just total cheesemaxxing diet for weight gain
Nothing. Felt fine since I stopped and have no desire. Only thing I still crave and have to battle is getting mcnuggets, taco bell or RC Cherry cola/Code Red so idk
You can't plan your quit date because you'll keep that date moving forever. You can't wean down until you are less addicted because your body will always want more. You have to get sick of this constant negotiation trying to outsmart the addiction. You have to think in black & white and decide to be sober. No one can help you make and hold that decision to be sober, because there will always be someone handing you a drink. All you can do is choose sobriety as your new way to get high. When people stopped handing me drinks was when I started leaving full glasses of alcohol laying around their houses for them to clean up after I was gone.
I know exactly what he means when he says he would be happier if he never took a drink. I have been sober for 9.5 years. Started drinking in my teens to numb the pain from my parents abandoning me and life in general. When I got sober, I had to face all of it and deal with the pain. Eventually the wound healed and it really is like a literal wound healing. The pain dulls and then leaves. I never have a desire to drink now. I don't even want to eat bad food, but I think back to the stupid things I did drunk. It's amazing I survived it.
The alcohol just prolongs pain which could be resolved by facing it. I lost a lot of life because of that.
Never be afraid to admit that the hype about alcohol being “awesome” was always true, it just wasn’t the whole truth (organ failure, lost money, lost focus, lost friends, lost control, etc).
I’ve been clear off the alcohol for 6 years. My friend died and I spent the night drinking vodka straight out of the bottle and started screaming at the sky
Neil is addicted to glasses frames. Eight years sober, not an NA/AA guy, but when they say “people, places, and things,” they aren’t lying. Congrats on a year!
Id be much happier had i never found my addiction. Once you know theres an escape when things get tough , its hard to not at least look at that door, or go right through it. If i never knew the easy way I'd he happier.
No offense to Neal, but it's cool how the job of podcast host has created a place in society for these sorts of non-viables. You can tell there is a real sense of purpose in trying to carry on a conversation, understand what the other person is saying, or get a word in while the other person is talking. It's neat.
I've only been able to quit the things where it got SO bad I couldn't do it again. Ether, Xanax, kind of weed (I'll still do it here and there but I can't be a stoner anymore), all of them I hit a wall where it was like "if I keep doing this I will die". I should probably quit drinking too, but, it never has hit that point where it's that bad.
The reason that the addict and the broken person feels it so much is because all this stuff they keep saying, "just let go of it" is connected to real shit. Feelings and emotions from hurts that others or you yourself have done to you. Just saying, "let go of the past" to regret and shame is to try and dismiss your feelings. People laugh all the time, but Jesus is the way. Forgiveness, redemption, love, kindness, gentleness, is all found in the Bible to the broken person who realizes that they can't just ignore the pain in life like a LOT of other do. By the way, those other people just hide it better, with workaholism, sex addiction, obsessiveness in other areas that stay under the radar or are "ok" by the world's standard.
These guys think too much into this. It’s not that deep. You do it because it feels good. Soon as he said adhd I couldn’t take him serious. ADHD doesn’t exist
Each alcoholic has their own unique challenges to navigate, often very unrelated to the alcohol for the most part, and those are the core of the desire and temptation. Feeling great from the alcohol, but why not from within – most of these chemical alcohol strikes are already within, and we simply need another way of finding peace and vibrancy in healthier ways. Pretty sure mine is the ADHD, never officially diagnosed but it seems to probably be in the right boat – massive overthinking sometimes lol.
The alcoholism grasp of thinking becomes INCREDIBLY sophisticated sometimes, even invading dreams. Absolutely ridiculous how it tries to rationalize slipping.
I'll probably catch some hate for this but saying "you're always an alcoholic, you're just sober now" just tells me you didn't quit in the correct way. There is no chance of me ever having another drink again and it doesn't bother me at all being around people who are drinking. They might as well be drinking pool chlorine as far as I'm concerned – I just don't want any.
Congratulations on the show Neal, I recently ran out of things to keep me up at night, and a drunk 10 year old Champ Kind really hit the spot. Thanks, and kudos.

ADHD is not a real thing.
I'm tired of hearing everyone blame everything on their fake mental illness.
I am a sober alcoholic, and I did it because I made terrible choices. It wasn't because of a fictitious mental disorder.
