Journey Just Did Something NO ONE Expected

Rock Feed | September 4, 2026

Journey brought a Steve Perry lookalike on stage in Japan — twice — and Arnel Pineda stepped aside.

Hugo Valenti, a Long Island tribute singer Journey passed over in 1998, sang “Faithfully” in Fukuoka on August 30, then “Faithfully” and “Keep On Runnin'” in Tokyo on September 1 after Jonathan Cain introduced him as a special guest. Nobody in the band has explained it, and Arnel’s contract means the farewell tour can’t go on without him.

You people our crazy ! Hugo doesn’t sound like or look like Steve Perry! Steve is the man! He is the voice and always will be! Neal just wants to keep making money! I get it but don’t make him look that Hugo can sing like Steve no way! Steve is really handsome ! Hugo is no Steve Perry people wake up doesn’t have or his looks

Followed and been to so many Voyage shows in CT since 2003, watch in local bars for several years in the beginning. He is so talented but even more is such a nice man. Always approachable and friendly.

After watching footage of Hugo with Journey, did nobody notice how pitchy his voice was? Don’t get me wrong,Hugo has a good voice, but there is no replacement for Steve Perry

Journey has been gone since Steve has been gone! Journey has to be one of the most dysfunctional bands of all time! Do any of them even get along or is it just a stage performance? If you answer the later it's not a band it's just a money grab!

I heard a video of Vince Neil the other day and as a huge Motley fan back in the day Vince sounded much like he did back in the 90s on the Feel-good tour. I bring this up because these band are not like the Stones or The Who. The Who eventually got it. The Stones still sound pretty dam good. Here's the point you know that Mick is singing the songs still. Vince imo couldn't have just came back to form after years of sounding bad. Journey is not and never will be Journey again like Motley is not Motley any longer. You know I think if Motley changed the name with John Corabi that band may have lasted. The problem was not Motley changed the singer, it wasn't Motley anymore. It wasn't that the music was bad, the fans seen through the hoax! Same here and it's been that way for decades. Those who go to these shows go for nostalgia that is it. Someone said Hugo went from a tribute band to the biggest tribute band. 100% on the mark. I think Steve would have retired long ago if that band stayed together. Once the in fighting begins the band is over. Zeppelin got that and Bonzo was the glue. Once the glue was no longer there it was easy for them to go their separate ways! These days that is pretty much all I listen too!

I find it very ironic that a lot of people were complaining about Journey having vocalists that sounded like Perry are now cheering for a Steve Perry imitation! 😅😂😂😂😂😂

I'd love a show with vocals by Arnel, Deen, Hugo and Augeri. Let's make it happen. At this point, Journey really is its own tribute band. At least the Augeri era showed some evolution of the band with new songs that sounded like Journey. Pinel is a great singer, but almost none of his stuff sounded like Journey.
