Clowns at birthday parties are still kind of a thing (I work in the family entertainment business) but the traditional face paint and circus performance is rare- it’s more a fun person in colorful clothes leading activities and games or performing a show of some sort.

I think Streamline Moderne should have been on this list as well. We still see lots of this style in older cities and plus it’s an American response to the Depression.

11:46 That Piano is a Tinny Piano, or a junk piano.

It’s a piano where you put things like Tacks onto the soft felt of the Piano hammers in order to produce a more percussive sound.

The 'Las Vegas' aesthetic comes to mind. Elvis impersonators, 24-hour wedding chapels, gaudy flashing lights, plus the imagery specific to gambling (dice, poker chips, slot machines). Supremely tacky, with the hint of 'classy' things (art deco architecture, Sonatra-esque crooners) that just make it more tacky.

Don't know if it exists anywhere outside of pastiche, though–I doubt it has much resemblance to Vegas itself, and the theme doesn't really lend itself to family-friendly kitsch.

Really annoyed with how you classified a tomahawk as a plains symbol when the word itself literally comes from an Algonquin language(Powhatan): tamahaac. The Northeast woodlands introduced this tool and weapon to the English and French, and were quick to adopt metal versions. Such was their versatility that many colonists adopted the tomahawk as part of their kit. While the plains peoples did use tomahawks too, it is utterly incorrect to class it alongside teepees and war bonnets. One could easily argue that in the American mind, the tomahawk is far more associated with the Northern Woodlands than the plains.

I just realized that I believe the turning point for clowns shifting from wholesome fun to evil was the real life serial killer John Wayne Gacy in the 1970s. He became notorious for how he’d been an amateur clown performer while he was also murdering scores of young men. The photo of him dressed up as a clown was reproduced a lot at the time. It was after this that circus / clown horror movies began.

I love North Carolina because you can find every. single. one. of these aesthetics en masse depending on where you are horizontally in the state. Further east is more nautical, further west is more cabin, and everything exists between in the piedmont.

my favorite aesthetic is definitely the clear case technology of the 90's and early 2000's. but im very biased as i went to school that had a computer lab full of the Imac G3 in different colors.

While the 50s aesthetic is the one most closely associated with diners, ive seen restaraunts with practically all these aesthetics, barring maybe the circus one.

11:47 that music is called Ragtime, and it's usually an anachronism, as Ragtime didn't really exist until the 1890's, where it emerged from wealthier African-American communities, and wasn't popular enough among white audiences to be played by a random pianist in a bar until just before WWI. Ragtime was an immediate ancestor of Jazz, though.

Would Deco be considered an American aesthetic (even if it's not current)? It does have some other influences like Mesoamerican but it's practically everywhere during the Gilded Age.

The nautical aesthetic is so ubiquitous that when you said it, I thought to myself "what the hell is this guy talking about," but once you started explaining it, I understood what you meant immediately. It doesn't even register as an aesthetic, it's just a room to me.

I'm not sure if this is an American aesthetic, but there's a specific variant of the industrial aesthetic you showcased that I always wanted to know how to refer to it. It sorta fits the bills under industrial, but has emphasis on moving parts and what I can only really describe as gadgets. Lots of use of copper, pipes, cogs, and gears. Maybe a Tesla coil or two. It's less minimalist than other industrial examples and is, despite the exposed nature, often very clean. The movie Robots I feel does an especially good job at representing this aesthetic
