The Meta Settlement Isn’t The Victory You Think It Is

This was seen by many as Meta’s Big Tobacco moment, but in reality doesn’t do anything to actually hold big tech accountable or help teens in a meaningful way.

Hoping smarter people than me will look into this because I can't find much past the actual case. It was decided this month. I know Meta is mentioned in the documents I read, but I'm not very good with understanding legal documents. Had anyone been talking about U.S. v. Anderegg?

They didn't care about how social media affected the youth for years and years and years until, suddenly, social media was revealing genocide in Palestine.

Now they're concerned about the ""mental health"" of the youth.

I was a school psychologist when the cigarette settlement funds were available for schools to set up prevention programs. I set up one that was well received by the students, and I like to believe that, along with larger social pressures, bans on public smoking, label warnings, PSAs, and increased taxation, it made a difference. It remains to be seen how these settlement funds will be used, but like cigarettes, it takes education (in this case, media literacy) and a multiple-front campaign. I work with families now, and while parents and kids are aware of how they're being manipulated, they find it almost impossible to resist. We have a Digital Media Treatment and Education Center in our state that is exposing the flaws in the argument about causation vs. correlation. Kids with no prior signs of mental health or addiction problems are requiring treatment. Meta insiders and whistleblowers have testified that their products are intentionally designed to "hook" users. That shows intent to knowingly and systemically do harm. This needs further litigation, and it's why I'm upset about the failings of the settlement. It doesn't go far enough. NOT YET.

The F.A.T.E algorithm (Focus, Attention, Tribe, Emotion) is specifically engineered to act and manipulate the mammalian brain, circumnavigating the human sentient aspect. We should protect minors above everything else, it being society’s most vital endeavour.
The foundation of all meta products is engineered engagement. F.A.T.E doesn’t engage in an objective manner, quite the opposite they are designed specifically to manipulate. When we consider minors developing critical thinking, it’s nefarious at core, engineered to make them feel part of the ‘tribe’ meta decides. Considering the pivotal part of peer pressure in a child’s mental evolution, it’s a clearly and arguably deliberate act of engagement.

So… no more "finders keepers", which is the backbone of American mentality?
Anyway, this digital ID system is just the ultimate collection of faces and makes the face recognition a piece of cake.

I wonder how Ford and other cases would have gone if they said… "Let's sell the part at $20, and advertise the additional safety feature available for such a low cost. We can tell consumers there is a 1:10000 chance based on current federal statistics, of that type of accident happening, and an additional 1:10 chance that the explosive fire will happen and a 1:6 chance of severe injury or death. We can claim the risk is too low for a recall, but our curious and safety research and desire for perfection has made a solution…."

I want to mention; This is something that has happened, and will keep happening. Until and unless the companies are forced to pay more to make victims whole than it would cost to ensure there will be a mitigated risk of harm, they will keep doing it.

Just reminds me of Stella, the victim of McDonald's scalding hot coffee. ( Before anyone tries to lie about it; she was in a parked car. She had the cup between her legs, and was trying to remove the lid to add creamer. The coffee spilled onto her crotch, and other areas, and caused 3rd degree burns.)

The stress from the skin grafts she required, and the court cases, were too much for the older woman; and she passed after another jury (after an appeal from McDonald's), reduced the amount the jury awarded her, down to barely anything.

She tried to get payment for her surgery and other costs, and McDonald's refused several times, and that's why she took them to court. She also only asked for the initial amount she had already been asking for, and legal fees, and the jury members are the ones who gave her the msssive award.
