The bryozoan section was Awesome because it finally told me what a distant magical childhood memory was, had been out fishing on some of these man made lakes with my dad and we went over a Huge area of these weird blobby things under the water just like that picture and when I asked what it was calling it coral-like my dad just said there wasn’t freshwater coral 😢 finally a mystery solved…

Few years ago I saw a muntjack in my friends very overgrown garden, thought I’d try and sneak up on it and see how close I could get… I got to within about 10m, the thing spotted me. Instead of running like I assumed it would it made a noise that I was not ready to hear from a deer… I was so surprised I convinced myself there must be a dog hiding is the bushes behind the deer barking at one or both of us…it started me dead in the face barked like a dog for a second time then it bounded off through the undergrowth. I nearly jumped out of my skin 😂

idk why this was recommended to me now, but i love zoology and i still don't understand how most other ppl seem to be uninterested in learning about the other animals that live amongst us we see every day. i wish i could leave the US and study this somewhere else where i have a chance at actually getting a job in said field

muckjacks kinda remind me of anjanath from monster hunter how it opens up its nose crest to smell batter and even mark things with its snot i wonder if evolution goes far enough we could see something similar in real life

Muntjacks are also found in the UK! They were introduced from China by a lord who thought they'd go great on his estate. Then they got out. They're an invasive species!

We have Muntjac deer in England as well. They came over on boat from China, I believe. They are an invasive species now. They threaten the habitats of our native deer. I hit one with my van once…it ran right in front of me on a motorway slip road. It ran off but I can't imagine it survived a 50mph hit for long 😬. I felt bad but honestly glad it was only a small species of deer and not a fully grown stag. Could have killed us both.

Super interesting. I don't get enough just new interesting stuff to learn on YouTube, and this is one of the best interesting videos I've seen. That we know of.

Oh hey, we have Reeves' Muntjac in the UK! They're an introduced species and I've seen 'em knocking around before, they hang around in the fields near me (and because of that, I didn't realise they weren't a well-known deer). I did not, however, know they had some crazy scent glands, holy hell!
It's really interesting to hear they're not very well-understood in their native habitat, as they're absolutely everywhere over here and are considered a bit of a nuisance. They loooove running in front of cars.
Also, little story I think is funny – there's a little patch of planted woodland near me that I like to wander round, and apparently so do our local deer. At least three times now, I've managed to lock eyes with a muntjac or fallow. Both of us freeze in the same manner, before awkwardly and politely backing off like we've both just nearly bumped into one another in a hallway or something. Never been barked at or charged at, just "Oh, terribly sorry sir, you go first, I insist!"
