In the early 70s we sometimes looked into the darkness and saw many fire flies . Being into marvel comics. We imagined it to be a jack Kirby “ cosmic war “ scene .

It must be something much more sinister. It is not 2 or 6 percent year to year. It looks like over here the insects are GONE! Nothing is flying around my garden lights! That is scary!!!

I live in Asheville, NC. If it’s any consolation, the fireflies/Lightening Bugs have been amazing this year. We also have the blue ghost variety right up the hill. I felt the same way as you until this year. I need to find out why they are so prolific this year.

Blame agricultural chemicals … in Australia we rarely see Christmas beetles or Bogong moths anymore, whereas when I was a kid 60 years ago there were plagues of them every summer.

I grew up i the 70s and I remember bug encrusted cars. they did cover damn near everything. that was why every gas station had that free wiper .. all those damn bugs

I’ve been noticing this for years, my daughter was going to school at U of Michigan and we would make the drive from Chicago in the dead of summer quite often.
This trip is through largely rural areas for long stretches and I would find maybe a dozen or less squashed bugs on the front of my car.
Back in the 50’s and 60’s we would drive from Chicago up to my grandparents house in the chain o lakes region of northern Illinois a much shorter distance, and afterwards the car would be coated with bugs.
I cannot believe that this video is the first time I have heard anyone talking about this.
