Black Metal can incorporate elements of whatever the musician wants as long it's genuine, look at Diapsiquir or Blut Aus Nord and at the same time the genre as a whole holds it's grounds with keeping the core elements alive and that's what I love about it.

This video is so ignorant! Deafheaven copied Alcest, who made superior blackgaze in most black metal fan's eyes. And there are many innovative black metal bands, and a whole genre called avant garde black metal with bands such as Ved Buens Ende and Deathspell Omega that are both loved by the scene.

all this gatkeeping and still cant keep the racists out. its all for nothing at this point. All i want is to listen to music, enjoy it and feel it and not have the sweaty chud fanbase call me a slur for simple listening to the music.

Deafheaven didn't push the style forward though. They were an an incredibly generic, in fact the MOST generic version of ideas that already existed when they came out. They are for people who need a safe space.

Gate keeping isn’t just about keeping people out, it’s about letting the right people in. I’ve had conversations with people where they didn’t really know about a genre but I could tell they would like it and shared a band or 2. I love doing it with dungeon synth especially, I’ve blown a few minds by showing people Warlock Corpse which can also be a black metal gateway if they like the songs with black metal vocals

Im taking a bit of an issue with your statement that ”if it sounds akin to the second wave… it is not being creative” or however you put it. It is fully possible to be wildly creative within a set of boundaries as well.

That a lot of fans of the genre doesn’t like modern acts like Deafheaven, isn’t really more weird than traditional Motörhead fans not liking Darkthrone.

They just don't want you to know how bad it really is, not just basic, I mean a widespread lack of talent.
Arckanum, Impaled Northern Moonforest, those are basic with huge tremendous talent behind it. Others need to be flamboyant and controversial and want attention, badly. The rest just want to make music for themselves to enjoy. Nothing wrong with that.

Something similar also happens with the occult and the paganism thing, nowadays there are lots of people either trying to invade avoidable groups' space or posting rubbish that just makes it harder to find something actually interesting or… True?

Gatekeeping has largely lost its practical power because information is freely available. That is why I have not really seen it as a meaningful issue for the past two decades. The only subgenre where I still see active gatekeeping is war metal, largely because some subset of people are deliberately unhelpful to newcomers. I have encountered that attitude both online and in real life, even in this decade. Even then, you can just ignore them. If you want to discover the music it is one of the easier genres to just find the music on your own.

Cradle were awesome live in the 2000s. Haven't seen them recently but them and Dimmu sound better than 99% of the trve cvlt shit from the 90s. Behemoth were more extreme and sounded better in the late 90s/2000s than any of them.

Gatekeep all you want, I do not like black metal.
    The image is ridiculous.
Painting your face attempting to look scary has the opposite effect on me.
You're not scary, you look stupid.

As a black metal fan I agree gate we shouldn't be so aggressive and let people enjoy the genre but we should still guide them to the better bands within the genre. Also you forgot to mention DSBM (Depressive Suicidal Black Metal) the genre hated on by even black metal elitists because it focuses on isolation and sometimes even self mutilation so it's "too emo" yet it's a genre that keeps an artist sane during dark times. We need to go after the actual posers who just use black metal as an "aesthetic" do better elitists!

If gatekeeping is bad, open the door. Take off the locks. They're racist anyway, because they hinder certain socio-economic developments. Huehue!
Also Varg is always around, because Varg is in you. Just waiting to surface… To start a large family!

r/blackmetal are posers who try gatekeeping and are considered failures in this “black metal scene” since you are stimulating modernity.

Also they are directly making it not underground anymore because advertising bands and such on a popular platform is not considered true cult.

    >I only listen to black metal im not a fanatic cultist or elitist but i do know some old folks who were into that stuff going as far as trying to leave society or not having any form of registered identity in general.
